Question about 10 gauge shotguns

Are 10 gauge shotguns CA legal?

A friend of mine recently asked me this and I did not know. He pointed out there was legislation back in the mid90s that was suppose to ban the usage of 10 gauge shotguns for hunting.

yes, this is right out of the dfg hunting regulations.

4) Shotguns 10 Gauge or Smaller. Shotguns 10 gauge or smaller using shot shells only and incapable of holding more than three shells in the magazine and chamber combined may be used. except no shotgun larger than 12 gauge shall be used in areas open to hunting on, over or adjacent to the waters of Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo County. If a plug is used to reduce the capacity of a magazine to fulfill the requirements of this section, the plug must be of one piece construction incapable of removal without disassembling the gun. Shotgun shells may not be used or possessed that contain shot size larger than No. BB in lead or T shot in steel or other nontoxic shot approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. All shot shall be loose in the shell.

a buddy of mine has an old side by side 10 ga. it is a BEAST!

I sometimes use my SXS 10 for turkey huntin. That gun is a massive beast ammo is expencive and sometimes hard to find, I have never found anything smaller than 5 shot for it. I bought it mostly for braggin.

One day! I have never been able to find a good one at a decent price locally. I'll probably go with a NEF single shot but recoil will be horrid. 10ga ammo availabilty as mentioned is bad.

While not banned in the state or for hunting; most, if not all State and Federal Refuges do not allow 10 gauges for hunting.
Check up on where you want to go.

It took a wile to find mine. I have a used ithaca and it cost me alot, but I got it cheeper than anybody else would have

I had a buddy that used one for duck hunting; browning auto IIRC. He had a cousin with some physical problems that he hunted with. Because of the cousin's issues he had to shoot a 20 gauge and wasnt too awful swift with that apparently. My buddy got the 10 cause he'd always let the his cousin have the first go at the birds, so when it was his turn to shoot he was always shooting at rapidly fading targets. The 10 with a pretty tight choke gave him the power and shot density to snipe the birds pretty well on the late shots. He said it was expensive and a beast to shoot though.
