Don't think so. For a lefty, the Mossberg 500/590 are a much better fit.

You can buy (or used to be able to) a left handed safety and it is easy to replace.

No it can not be done safely. You would have to get a new trigger plate assembly that is right hand eject/left hand safety. That is part number F112044 in matte and F112041 in blued. It is the same cast aluminum trigger plate housing that comes on the P model or Wingmaster. Both retail from Remington for $84.00. You would get the Blued for a Wingmaster and the matte for a P model or other model.

guys will tell you that it can be but it is not a safe modification as they drill another hole on the left side for the detent ball and spring. they then fill the old hole in with a pin or some even put liquid metal in it and then reverse the safety. This is not safe and not recommended by Remingotn.

JD, what's your opinion of left-hand safety conversions such as this one?
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

This is why I bought Mossberg 500. For a lefty the controls are in perfect position. Trigger, safety and action release. Right where you need em. Bonus for a lefty, you have a great view of the ejection port, bolt and chamber.

I am understanding the OP wants to put a left hand safety on a right hand 870, so the Parts numbers I gave him are for right hand eject/left hand safety trigger plate assemblies. This means they are for right hand 870's but are designed so the safety works like on a left hand 870. Right had eject simply means the ejection port is on the right side of the receiver. Since Remington only makes one left hand 870 these days and it is an Express with a Sporting barrel, Remington offers these trigger plate assemblies for left hand shooters who want to use the Police models and any other right hand 870.

I have never seen that conversion so know nothing about it. If being used on a new Remington weapon it would void the warranty and release Remington from any liability for an AD contributed to the safety system on the weapon. For that reason alone I would not recommend it. It may work fine and could be an option for the OP but I know nothing about it nor how it is designed.

The right hand eject/left hand safety trigger plate assembly allows you to use the Wilson or a Vang Comp safety and that make them desireable to guys with tactical weapons.

I was reminded by PM that Remington used to show how to do this modifcation. I believe that was back in the day of steel trigger plate assemblies. I do know it is not remmended now. I believe this is due to the fact that the metal assemblies being cast aluminum and the others being polymer. This is only my opinion of why they no longer recommend it, however as the PM mentioned it could have been due to some liability issues over the years. I will ask next time I have to call and beg one of the Factory LE instructors for advice.

Wouldn't it be easier to just learn to use it as is? It isn't like a pistol where the safety lever is on the wrong side of the gun. You just have to push it in the opposite direction as would a righty. Am I missing something here? I've used an 870 but don't own one.

the problem is that you can accidentily engage the safety with your trigger finger while shooting it. My Beretta shotgun is the same way. shoot some clays and about 50% of the time, the safety would be on after my first shot. Can't hit anything when it won't go bang. With the beretta, it was just a matter of reversing the safety barrel and now the saftey never engages when I don't want it to. Still can't hit anything iwth it but that is a different story.

If the safety were in front of the trigger, like it is on some guns, then it woudln't be an issue, but behind the trigger it is liable to be accidentially engaged by a lefty.
