I have a new 500 w/ about 100 shells down the barrell. Today I was shooting trap and the dang thing wouldn't go bang/fire after five shots. Cycled the action a few times and still wouldn't fire. Wouldn't dry fire either. In addition, the safety is stuck in the fire position. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Mossberg 500 won't fire

Have you changed the stock recently. If so, the new stock bolt might be too long and interfering with the safety.
Is the bolt getting to full battery?
Do you have a light mount or anything attached to the barrel or magtube that is interfering with the forend?Last edited by prc77; 09-18-2010, 7:30 PM.C Co. 509th ABN/PFDR

No new stock and no other modifications. Just re-read the manual and it says that Mossberg will warranty the shotgun for 10 years (it's less than 6 mo. old). Guess I should send it in.Comment

Before you send it in, I'd advise you to field strip it and clean it first before you take such drastic action.Don't let the name fool you...Comment

Thanks for the tips. Will give it a try when the kiddos go to sleep (and after the football games.Comment

Update: Fixed
Field stripped and reassembled. I didn't find any foreign subtance, rocks or crud in the receiver or trigger assembly. After reassembly, I cycled it back and forth, verified that the safety functions, and practice fired some A-zooms. No idea what the problem was.
The good news is that I now know how to field strip my 500.Comment

It sounds like the sear might have been hung up on something. It might be a cosmoline issue. My 590 came absolutely packed with it. You might consider doing a detailed cleaning and re-oiling of the trigger group. I've seen people leave the cosmoline in place and not have issues, but everybody I've known that has stripped the stuff out and re-oiled everything has been happy with the difference. Opinions will vary but I'm a fan of cleaning with Hoppes #9, oiling the trigger group and bolt internals with Dextron ATF, and lubricating any other sliding parts with molly grease. On the other hand, I have a buddy that simply opened the action, doused the internals with CLP, blew the excess out with an air can, and he was perfectly happy with it.Up for rent...Comment
