Mossberg 590(a1) 18.5 magazine extension *Project COMPLETE*

Magazine extensions are made for most shotguns: remingtons, winchesters, & some mossbergs (930's & 835's).

I've tried my best and searched high and low on that thing called the INTERNET to try to find a magazine extension for a 590(a1) 18.5 barrel. Main purpose is to bring the magazine tube forward, flush with the barrel. I'm aware the 20 inchers magazine tubes are flush with the barrel, but I think it would cool to have a shorter 18.5 590 with a flush mag tube. It makes it more asthetically pleasing + adds ammo capacity.

I know Nordic and Choate make mag tube extensions for mossbergs, but those are manufactured and tailored for sg's that can handle 3.5" shells. So the shortest (+2) extensions for the 930's/835's will go past the 590(a1) barrels.

I'm aware vang comps has a +1, but that would be too short.

I'm also aware that there is a custom maker of mag tubes, but that's a different topic/thread. (I'm sure most know what/who I'm reffering too)

So is there a CalGunner out there with any good suggestions, ideas, or knowledge about 18.5 590(a1)'s and extensions?

I'm assuming there isn't enough consumer interests/demand with the 18.5's for big named companies to produce a product specifically tailored for the good ol' mossy 590(and variants).

Your thoughts, input, and suggestions are welcomed.

You could buy a Factory 8 shot magtube and have it cut down and rethreaded to the desired length.

I've got one of those +1 extensions from that guy from that topic/thread, but that was many moons ago. Turnaround was only a few weeks, but I've heard that it seems to be quite a bit longer now (a few months). I hope things get worked out, because it is a really good product.

18.5" 590A1 on top with his extension on top, 18.5" 870P with Wilson Combat extension on bottom:

Are we not allowed to say the company? Max 100!? I was quite satisfied and had mine before I was even able to get a 590 A1 18.5" -- the product is what finally sold me on the heavy gun.

That's what sold me also when deciding between the 20 and 18.5. I saw pics of sg's with the max100 extension. So I ordered one after I submitted the DROS to the 590a1. That was in May. It's September, put plenty of shells through the 590 already, and still no mag extension. It is probably a GREAT product, but I can't speak for that. Seems like most ppl who placed an order after April/May have recieved nothing. I'm not here to bash him, there's a place for that on the other thread.

I made this thread to see if there was other options out there anyone has came up with to make a 7+1 18.5 Mossberg 590. I have $65 invested in an extension I really don't know that I'll ever receive. If Craig ever holds up his end of the bargain to me and the dozens of others, that would be great. But it's looking grim for us who have been waiting.

So I made this post to see if there are any creative ideas out there and/or maybe an alternative to the max100 extension. PRC77 suggested using a 8 round mag tube, but I haven't seen any 590 mag tubes readily for sale online. They have plenty of the 500's, but the compatibilities between the 590's and 500's end at the reciever.

-Fred and Al, interested in selling me your 590 extension?

how much does it cost for that extension? I mean it might be worth it just to get another shotgun at this point or sell yours and get a 9 shot mag 590.

Thnx prc. Those were the 2 places I should have checked first!

Ecc: The extension is $65. The great thing about the 590 18.5 version is that it's compatible with the mossberg 835. So I can buy a 28" vent rib barrel with Utili-mag chokes or get a 24" slugster barrel. It can't fire 3.5 shells like the 835 tho, no biggie.

                    OR

Another choice I have is to get a $200 tax stamp and chop the barrel flush with the mag tube. I think that brings the barrel to 14 inches.. So $200 for the stamp, $75 to get the barrel chopped and sights drilled and tapped. $275. And i'll still have the capability to use an 835 barrel.

If you wanted to make it yourself, the Choate + 2 extension looks a lot like what Craig provides. Looking at it on-line, it looks like they just bend in the end of the tube, and glue in a plastic piece. They cost $45 if I remember right. I have bought one and am going to try and make my own. I'm another one that gave Craig $65 and can get neither a refund nor the product.

I don't think the 14" barrel is an option for you if you live in Calif.

So short barreled shotguns are illegal to pocess in CA, even though registered, and tax stamp payed?

Yeah, I think modifying a choate would be the easiest route. I was reading a product review on midway, the person said the +2 was 6" and stuck out 1 3/4" past the muzzle break on an 18.5. Cutting it flush isn't a problem, just capping the end will require some work. I wish I had a welder so I could shorten the tip and reattach it back to the extension. Maybe a pipe cap from the hardware store that's the same dimension? Another problem that I have to solve is matching the parkerized finish on mine. If I do succeed in cutting and capping, I ll probably just use some dark gray rattle can and call it a day.
