    Mossberg 500 Hunting Legality Question

I have a Mossberg 500 I want to buy from my brother so I can use it for hunting, trap and SD. Obviously, I will need different chokes on it so the barrel will be modified for such BUT what I want to know is that if there is a way to modify the magazine tube so I can only do the 5 shots for hunting? It is blocked off from the front but is there a dowelrod/tube I can slide up there then pull out when I am done hunting?

It may be a stretch, but you never know...

Your shotgun can only hold 3 shells in it, including one in the chamber when hunting. Is this a standard 500 or a Home defense model? The standard model should have a dowel inside the tube magazine that only allows you to load 2 shells in it.

This model does not have the duck plug inside of it. I just did some reading and I think that I will buy a duck plug so I can have it for when I am hunting. Does anyone know where these are sold?

Also, the 500 ATP can take 3" shells, right? I just tried a dummy one in the chamber and it seems to close up nice and sight like the 2 3/4" but I am not sure since there are no markings to indicate that it can take 3" shells.

Your should be able to buy a plug at any outdoor store and maybe even walmart. It should be marked on the receiver wht size shells it shoots. If it doesn't say 3", I wouldn't shoot 3"

Edit: I think I have a extra plug in my safe, let me check and if I do you can have it, just send me your address.

DO NOT go 5 shells unless you like hefty fines from the GW
          3 shells max

That's all the one from Mossberg is.. it's a wooden dowel, about 1/4 inch, with an o-ring on each end to stop it from rattling. Cut a 9" (I was gonna say "measure 3 shotshells..." Then I remembered: 3" mag x 3.. durr.) length of 1/4 inch dowel, take the mag tube end off, and drop it in there. Test for fit, you should only fit 3 rounds in it.

I'm not home right now but if you PM me tomorrow I will give you how long to cut the wood dowel. Go to Homey Depot and buy the wood for a buck and cut it. Thats all that ever came with them.

I just measured the dowel that came with my Mossberg and M.Sage have it right.

In a pinch once my Dad and I cut down a plastic coat hanger. Just tried loading shells until we had the right length. Just about anything will do.
I do believe the law says that it must be a one piece device to restrict the magazine.
