Thoughts on Big 5 870 sale

Every once in a while, Big 5 will have Black synthetic 870s with 7+1 capacity in 12ga and 20" bbl.

I'm just curious as to what kind of 870 it's based on and if you have opinions about it...

I'm guessing it's most likely built on an Express receiver rather than a Wingmaster or Police, correct?

Well since all 870's are built on the same receiver and the only difference is the finish. go to www.remington.com and down load the 2010 parts list for the 870 and you will see that the stripped Express receiver retails for $247, the Police receiver for $247, the Wingmaster receiver for $247 and even the Marine magnum receiver is $247. Why? Because they are the same except for finish.

The weapon Big Five calls the 870 Security ( thier name ) is the model 25077 Remington Express HD. 18.5" barrel with cyl bore, bead sight and matte finish. It has a synthetic rear stock and Speed Feed LE forend. This one has the Remington 2 shot LE Extension, also in matte finish. Their is a 4+1 model of this same weapon and that is the one that Wilson Combat buys then builds on. I build on the 25077 model. Understanding that there is only one 870 and they only differ by finish, furniture and a couple very small parts, you will realize that the 25077 is the best value out there for HD or Duty.

It sells for from $330 to $350 depending where you are is this great land and from now till December 31st it comes with a mail in rebate for $30

I saw it for $330 on the mailbox specials with that already mentioned $30 rebate.

The forend on the Police 870 is a Speedfeed forend if it is synthetic. If this model from Big 5 (forgive me guys I have no idea what that is I assume it is a sporting goods store?), comes with a standard Remington forend you can always give JD a ring over at AI&P and he can sell you a Speedfeed forend. Which you will need if you plan on running a side saddle anyways. While you are on with him I suggest asking him about the 870 tune up package to bring your 870 up to fighting speed by the time you are done installing those parts all for about $20 you will pretty much have a Remington 870 Police. http://www.aiptactical.com/Accessory_Sales.html

For the record, I am confused about two things.

I don't know what the fore end differences are, all I know is that the gun in question looks like this:


What really confuses me is that the Remington Website says that this shot gun is a 6+1 capacity weapon.

The ad on the Big 5 sheet (yes, CDMJ, it's a sporting goods store) simply says that the gun is an "8-shot."

Could someone clear this up, or is it just a typo?

rojocorsa do you have a link or a model number? If the gun at Big 5 has a 20 inch barrel with an extended magazine then I guarantee it will be a 7+1 capacity. All of the 20 inch 870s with an magazine extension get the 3 shot extension which will be flush with the end of the barrel. The 2 shot extension is flush with the end of the barrel on the 18.5 inch models. So the 18.5 inch models are 6+1 capacity (seven shot) and the 20 inch models are 7+1 capacity (eight shot). As for the forend, that is the standard forend from Remington. I kind of like that old school look, but if you want to add a side saddle you will need to swap out the forend for a Speedfeed or other brand that is shorter and does not come back over the receiver.

not a typo, i have the big 5 special shotgun. i heard that this gun was a "big 5 only" type of shotgun, and you wont find it on the remington website..and after a little googling, i found out that it was true, i just cant find the website anymore lol... but yes, it's an 8 shot, 20 inch barrel with 3 shot extension.

Be prepared to pay. The wood is going up in price it seems almost daily. My advice would be to give JD at AI&P a call and see if he can get you some wood furniture for your 870.

How to buy a Remington 870 from Big 5:

- Check the bore to make sure it's smooth and has no pits
- Check the foregrip to make sure it slides easily and doesn't catch halfway through the racking motion
- Check that the foregrip doesn't move side to side
- Shoulder the 870 and see how well and how fast you gain a sight profile on a target (not someone else in the store!!!!)
- Move the safety to make sure it will not unlock when not wanted, but it will unlock easily when you want it to
- Check the stock to make sure it's tight and fits snug into your shoulder
- Check trigger pull to make sure it has a clean, crisp break that "surprises" you
- Rack the slide several times to ensure it doesn't hang up
- Give it back to the employee and buy a Mossberg 500

I've bought 3 870s from big 5 (all on sale) and they have all worked exceptionally well, at a great price
