Mossberg 930 SPX double as trap/skeet gun?

If the Mossberg 930 SPX had a longer barrel could it also double as a trap/skeet gun? What about chokes? can you make it tighter for 3 gun, and looser for clay birds?

Sure I don't see why not. The best option would be to buy another barrel for it from Mossberg. I would call their customer service and see what it would cost to buy one of their 930 field barrels. These should be choke ready. Then all you would have to do is remove the rear rail and sight and you would be ready to bust some clays.

My Mossberg 930 is my trap gun. It has the 28" vent rib barrell, ported, and has screw-in chokes.
I added a 5 round extension to mine, so it's 9 +1, just incase of zombie clays...LOL

Yeah, that makes sense. Is that rear sight and rail just unscrew right?

Looking more carefully on the Mossberg site there's a field/security combo, but I want the sights of the SPX for 3 gun, USPSA.

Does anyone have any idea if the shorter tactical barrel is 'choke ready' too? a guy shooting 3 gun tightened up the choke so he could shoot steel plates easier, instead of just knocking them all down with one shot Do the chokes just screw into the end of the barrel?

Totally possible to do and changing barrels is best.
Loading up to full capacity will wear your arms out in no time so just load a few.
I have used a stock 590 to shoot trap and apart from the odd looks from other trap snobs present, it worked okay. Cylinder bore made long shots difficult/hard.
Try it anyway. If only for the reaction from the other shooters there.

I use my 930 field for trap and skeet.... although I'm no pro, it does work fairly well for me. If you do order another barrel from Mossberg, I would recommend the 28" vent ribbed and ported barrel. I believe it cost in the neighborhood of $160-$170, last time I checked.

I bought my 28 inch vent ribbed barrel for $156 for my 930, works great for clays, and has the mossberg accuchoke on it so you can change the choke to whatever you want. i stick with modified choke for trap/skeet

Why not take it as is? Some places don't care about the barrel length. I've seen some folks w pumps with ghost rings. Ive also seen Stoger side by sides as well. I'm not very good (I hit about 30% of the time). If I got better, I might start to see what is optimal. I wouldn't let what you have stop you from trying.

I don't have it....yet! I'm considering it, but was looking into if it can double as a sporting gun too. I just didn't want to have to buy 2 guns if the one could do both! It seems like it can, so this is sounding like a very tempting! My main interest in it is the tactical length barrel and the sights to use for USPSA 3 gun/steel, with a possible speed loader ramp mod. But I also want a semi for clays (already have a Remington pump). Since money doesn't grow on trees, it might have to do double duty. And also since I can't fork out 2K to trick out a Benelli, this is a good alternate.

Anyway, thanks for the input guys! This one is sounding really good!

Its not going to be quite a brilliant as a gun optimized for trap or skeet, but it should do the job just fine for a lot less.

If your looking to shoot 3 gun with it also, forget about the SPX those sights will slow you down. Look at the 930 field with a 21" smooth bore barrel

The barrel that comes with the 930spx is a fixed cylinder bore. You could have it threaded for chokes but it costs approximately the same as buying a new barrel.

This might be slightly off topic but I will toss it out there. 3 gun as well as the single firearm stuff is a lot of fun. If u r new to firearms, I strongly urge u to buy the books by Col Jeff Cooper. He modernized a lot of firearms training. One of his pet peeves was removing the practical aspect from this kind of competition. For your initial purchases, I'd suggest getting firearms that can be used for home defense needs. You can see firearms in 3 gun that have been tuned for the sport and have moved away from being practical defensive weapons. I would shoot that at 3 gun in the configuration for which I want it for home defense. You will still have lots of fun in 3 gun and learn a ton. I'm not saying u r doing this. Just my thoughts. As you own more and more firearms, you can then start to do things where it becomes more specalized. The 930 SPX will serve u well in both 3 gun and clay shooting sports.

As for home defense, I have not found the 930 SPX to be NOT as reliable as a pump. For social shooting, the semi auto is fine and it only takes seconds to resolve. For home defense, I want a pump as I have found it to be more reliable. I own both so I'm not bashing. Its just I have a strong preference on which I'd want to use.
