    Magazine tube dimples

I'm in the market to buy my first shotgun. After some research, I understand that the 870 magazine tube has dimples that require removal before one can install a magazine tube extension.

So what is the purpose of those dimples?

To make you buy a more expensive shotgun. In my research it seemed the consensus was to make it difficult to use a magazine extension on the base 870 models.

In stock form the dimples hold in the mag tube spring. Push down on the plastic end piece turn a quarter turn out comes the plastic thing and the spring. Drill out the dimples put in the new spring and mag tube extension and you are gtg.

Or buy the HD model and you're done.

The Detent you are asking about simply hold the mag spring retainor in. To remove them go to www.aiptactical.com and find the red link to the "How to Video" tube extension kit. Follow that to do it right.

Thanks for the info. I thought it was weird that a company would go through the trouble designing and installing something that ultimately gets removed by the customer. I figured that those magazine dimples served some sort of function.

They were added when the design changed to a plastic spring retainer from one in metal...aippi is the resident Remington expert here, he could give you the complete history if you really care. Follow his step-by-step stuff
