Are you renting or buying your home? The reason I ask is, they have between the stud gun cabinets you can mount in your closet.I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. -
The Sentry 10 gun safe will not set you back much and you can find them on sale come this fall at many of the major sporting goods stores and even Wal-mart. I have a three of them and have no negative issues with them.JD McGuire, Owner

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.Comment

A better question would be "how much can you spent?"
That would make reccomending something easy..Member: Patron member NRA, lifetime member SAF, CRPAOriginally posted by tony270It's easy to be a keyboard warrior, you would melt like wax in front of me, you wouldn't be able to move your lips.Comment

this is a big can of worms potential thread...
cheap or low priced ? cheap would be a stack-on metal cabinet from wally. i would keep ammo in it a i guess.
low priced would be a chinese made winchester form costco for about 600. would deter your typical smash and grab burglar.
i did a lot of research and ended up with an American made Amsec BF6636. it fit my needs for fire, burglar resistance and capacity. 2800 delivered and bolted to the floor by some big boys who do it for a living.
i can say this. buy a lot more than you think you need. guns multiply rapidly when kept alone in dark spaces. im at about max capacity with about 25 long guns and 35 handguns. wife will **** herself when i tell her i need another safe. im thinking about going with a 48 inch tall, 17 inch wide one for inside my closet to keep a few of my favorite HD guns.
just remember, ANY safe, given enough time and rudimentary tools can be busted into.Comment

In the area of safes I think you pretty much get what you pay for. High quality safes simply are not cheap. However, there is nothing wrong with a "cheap" safe (IMO) as long as you understand what it is and is not.
A "cheap" safe is likely not much more than a locked container...despite how solid it may look. It will keep the honest folks out, keep the guns secure from curious children, offer a small delay from a determined burglar, maybe even offer a little fire protection. It's certainly better than slapping a trigger lock on the gun and sticking it in the closet.
With that said, there are videos out on You Tube showing just how long it takes to break into a cheap safe...a couple of minutes with a crow bar if memory serves. And it is doubtful that a cheap safe would endure a real fire. If you have a significant amount of money tied up in your gun collection...or you expect to...I would say save your pennies and buy a high quality safe sooner rather than later. It will be money well spent.
The site below isn't the best laid out site in the world but it has a ton of really good information on what to look for in safes. But the prices will probably give you a heart attack.

Check walmarts website. They sell name brand stuff that isnt sold in their stores and can be delivered to your home. They have a ton of DOJ tested and approved gun safes ranging from $150 - $3,000

Thanks for the advice everyone. I first thought I needed a safe when I get my shotgun, but a gun lock should be good enough to take the SG home. However, with that said, I will start saving my money for my safe. I was hoping it would not cost more than $400.00.Comment

Cheap guns = cheap safe....Expensive guns get a good safe and usually means more than $400. I understand budgets and most anything is better than nothing, but the way I looked at it when I bought my first safe was: If they stole JUST my M1A and one 1911 how much would I be out ($1100 at the time) so that was my safe budget.
Things to look for:
Internal hinges, bolts on all four sides of the door, a fire rating to resist 1100 degrees (or more) for 60 minutes (most house fires are extinguished in less than 1 hour-wildfires excepted). Dial or keypad your choice, both are just as secure. If you own the home, make sure the safe is pre-drill for bolting to the floor (bolting to a wall only requires a chainsaw to free up). Get a safe that is bigger than you need. You collection will grow and it's easier to get one big one than it is to keep adding safes (I didn't learn this until too late).
So get the best, biggest safe you can afford, you will sleep better at night.Larry Renner
