    870 Heat shield

Hey guys, I just purchased an 870 and I am looking to put a heat shield on it, I consulted a few of my friends and they all said it really helps dissipate heat, not to mention look pretty damn cool.

I don't know what heat shield to get though, I have done some research and I have found only 3:

    1) ATI (looks the worst and reportable the worst quality)
    2) Mossberg heat shield and modify it
    3) John Masen (know nothing about it)

Seems like the Mossberg 500 has a lot more options when it comes to heat shields.

It's just an 870 Express with an 18" barrel, here's a pic of what it looks like (on sale at Turners for $319, how could I not?:

Can anyone help me out with suggestions? Please post pics if you got them.

    Thanks,
    Tony

I purchased the ATI heat shield and am satisfied with it. One thing I did notice is that it did not come with a stopper like I have seen in other heat shield packages. Purchased it from combathunting.com for cheap. In all honesty, I was worried about the "look" as well, but after awhile it doesn't make a difference.

Anyone want to share a pic of their 870 with the sheild? I'm thinking of getting one too.

I had a Tac-star on my 870 about 12 years ago. It wouldn't stay put and didn't really shield much of anything so I pitched it.

They look cool, but kind of a waste if you ask me.

The H&K FP6 Fabarm 12G came with a factory barrel shroud.

            +1.

I had the Tac-Star on my 870. After a while they can come loose, move a fraction of an inch forward, and you wont be able to slide the pump all the way back.

I would never have one on my home defense shotty for that reason.

How can the barrel cool more quickly if it's covered with a piece of perforated sheet metal?? ...

The heat shield is supposed to protect your hand from the hot barrel, it will not help cool the barrel.

"...look pretty damn cool" is in the eye of the beholder; it will add weight and not add to function or make the gun easier to shoot. I'd add a heat shield about as fast as I'd put a fake supressor on a rifle

If you're set on one, see if Wilson / Scattergun Tech might sell one as an individual part.

I do have a fake can on my UZI. The issue here is not the decision to get one, the issue here is what heat shield is the best.

IMO... None... A heat shield has little to no pratical use on a shotgun. Of all the shotgun drills I have ever done in any of the classes I have taken never once have I had a reason to grab the barrel.. The only thing one could possable do for you is get caught on something or cause the weapon to malf. at a time of need...

What is up will all this fake and usless crap people bolt on there guns? There is even a whole thread about it! Please, don't give the rest of the country any more reason to make fun of us!

You haven't even picked up the gun yet and you already want to TapCofuk it.. Next you will ask what is the best flash hider to get....

I am starting to learn towards the same conclusion. But none the less they sure do look cool. I just really don't see any drawbacks to having one - I doubt they add any real noticeable weight, if it is quality made it would not get snagged on anything, etc. The pro of a heat shield are the fact that it could protect you the hot barrel and it looks cool. To each his own. I already have an old Browning O/U (might sell it, someone just offered me $1,300 for it).

I reconsidered my reply & I see your point.

Both the fake can and the heat shield will be invaluable when the zombies attack

if the guy wants a heat shield let him get one...heat shields look cool and I want one for mine also....not to mention if you have a sling and carry it on your shoulder I wouldn't mind a heat shiel to ensure I don't get burned

Thats a pretty damn serious drawback right there if you ask me....could get you killed. Even if it's not on a defense shotty, that alone could end a nice day at the range (ask me how I know this)

a little red loctite and that heatshield won't come loose. why anyone wouldn't put loctite on a heatshied I don't know...

I never even considered that - good point, if it takes away from the reliability of the weapon then it is a definite drawback despite any pro's that might come up. As for the lock tight, would that really hold it in position?

FYI the only reason why I have a fake can on my UZI is because it is a 16" barrel and it just looks really stupid without it - plus it acts as a heat shield.

But my main question here is what is the best heat shield for the 870? What do you guys suggest?

                              ATI is a POS
Mossberg fits, but requires modifications I have learned

There has to be more companies that make a heat shield for an 870, I know some Mossberg 500's come stock with heat shields, does Remington offer any?
