    Mossy 500 FTE issues

I have a well used and beaten Mossy 500ATP. This was the old "loaded" version. It's really similar to the new Mossy 500's you can get a big 5. Anyway, I have been having some ejection issues.
Here's a quick rundown of the symptoms.
Unit feeds round, fires, extracts but sometimes fails to eject the shell.

I removed some debris from between the extractor claws and the bolt, looks like it built up over time, seems to hold the shell better, but still doesn't eject. I was using 3" 00 Mag. buck. I then tried some rubber buck shells that are much lighter. It throws them 5'-6' away. 3" buck seems to either fall out, or stay in the rec.

I took the thing apart today and looked at the ejector that screws to the inside of the rec. It looks shorter than my friends new Mossy 500. I think it looks shorter or is shorter due to wear. Also, the claws on the dual extractors look, well, not rounded, but definately not as crisp as my friend's does.

Anyone with some 'smith experience have any advice for me? I don't want to go replacing stuff I don't need to. Should I replace the dual extractors and the ejector? Or should I replace the whole bolt assy, and the ejector? I want to do it right the first time without spending uneccessary money. TIA

Well to remove the extractors I see a pin that needs to be driven out for each side. Doesn't look to hard. Sure is cheaper than buying a bolt assy.

Nothing that a little penetrating oil, heat, and patience won't fix... Helps to have a TV in the garage and a pack of beef jerky.

My own Failure-To-Extract (FTE) story with happy ending.

I bought my Mossy 500 less than a year ago new on sale at Big5. After dumping ~700+ rounds through the gun... I started having a FTE, while doing patterning of 00 buck at a local indoor range. I asked the guys there if they could look at my gun, but they said they only worked on handguns...

Being the way too busy guy I am - I didn't find the time during the week to take to a gunsmith... So a few weekends later I took it down to a outdoor range knowing the rangemaster there was rather knowledgeable. I tried shooting it first... uhhhhhhhhhh not a single FTE (I went through 100+ rounds)...

A couple weeks later I took my wife down to the indoor range - she shooting handguns - I again shooting my Mossy 500... and again I suddenly had FTE problems??? HUH?

FTE at indoor range. No problems at outdoor range? Then it occurred to me. I use my 18.5" barrel at the indoor range. I use my 24" barrel at the outdoor range.

I took the gun w/18.5" attached to my local gunsmith... I explain the problem he immediately gets a wise-*** smile on his face - sticks his finger into the chamber of the barrel - then looks at me and says what kind of crap ammo you shooting through this thing? And what are you cleaning with? You have a layer of plastic goo built up in the chamber...

I left with a bottle of Tetra Gun plastic solvent, and a 10 gauge brass brush (for my 12 gauge chamber) - the shotgun cleaning kit I bought with the Mossy - did not include a brass brush and did not include anything to dissolve plastic goo - from plastic shotshells from Estate and Wolf ammo I'd been using.

After slopping this plastic solvent into the chamber and bore (boy it smells nasty) repeatedly over and over for about 4 hrs... I'm happy to say, I've never again had an extractor problem with my 18.5" barrel!

I thought that might work but mine extracts fine, it's ejecting that it has a problem with. My roommates Mossy throws shells several feet whereas mine simply fall out or stay in the reciever.

Sorry when I mean failure to extract... (I mean fully extract including eject) my casings were getting "stuck" on the way out (when using my plastic goo'd 18.5" barrel). Sometimes I'd have to physically pull them out, sometimes I'd "double-pump" the gun to get them out...

And as I said, at the same time, when I changed to my 24" barrel, they would fly and hit the plywood walls on either side of me.

I really did think I had an extractor problem. I even contacted Mossberg, explained my problem, and they issued me a RMA to have the gun repaired if need be... but it all ended up being fixed with a $8 bottle of plastic goo remover, and a 10 gauge brass brush
