I'll say most experts prefer bead only.

But I'm an idiot and like to have GRS on mine. I'm guessing the experts are damn good with a bead, so they don't need anything else. I've fired less than a thousand rounds, so I've got some learning to do!

IMHO, GRS take a little longer to aim (again, I'm a noob. YMMV). Sometimes when I shoot clays, I ignore the rear sight and use the front as a bead, and it works ok for me. But I'm not a serious clay shooter.

Eh, I shoot for fun. I enjoy it. It works for me.

It's pretty hard to beat KISS. Great link Aippi.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

I just put a ghost rings on my 870 and took it to Angeles today to get it dialed in, it made it crazy easy to hit a steel plate at 100 yards with slugs. Not something you have to have but I like the sight picture and the tritium inserts let you see the sights at night. I also found I didn't have to mount it up as high in the pocket to get a good sight picture and cheek weld like before with only the bead, it felt like I had better visibility over the gun and wasn't so sucked down into it.

+1 for the bead. Sans that, between the GRS and an optic....Ghost Ring. At this point in development unless you go for an ACOG Reflex everything else will be battery reliant. As posted earlier, in a HD scenario it's likely to be stored longer and used less and that means when really needed most, battery failure (Murphy's Law).

Keep It Simple Shooter...best advice ever, wish I thought of it first.

            HD Shotgun?

Bead is all you want, you could go tritium bead.

hd shotgun you want a bead sight, you wont have time to turn on a red dot and if you try its a good chance you will be shot instead of shooting the suspect, you might not even have time to load the shotgun, the bg could be rushing in shooting in that case you wont have much time to do anything other than maybe get to the gun turn off the safety and shoot and thats if your lucky, ghost rings are very nice for shooting slugs but at in the house 00 buck with a bead sight is going to be just as accurate but faster, so my vote goes to the 18" barrel with bead sight. For target shooting at 50 yards your going to want ghost rings or a red dot for slugs, decide if you want your shotgun to be a primary hd gun or a fun gun then you can decide on what set up to get.

^^^ This. My Benelli Super Nova Tactical has sights but I ignore them for close range--they were meant for slugs.

HD=KISS. For slugs you might want something different or just practice more. Pretty much get whatever you want and become good with it. Have fun.

agreed, bead. or the fiber optic thingie like the 1300s have, it's nice. don't need fancy sights on a scattergun, that's why it's called a scattergun.
