    Remington 870 Express Magnum

O.K., I have a question. I tried searching but I could not find the answer.

I have a Remington 870 Express Magnum 7 shot. I took it to Angeles today and my buddies and I spent the majority of the morning busting clays (before the wind kicked up). I really enjoyed myself.......a lot. My question is this.

Can I buy a second barrel to use for trap shooting? I was told by someone who I think does not really know a lot about shotguns that you can only buy a longer barrel for the 5 shot.

If you can what barrel do you recommend? If you can't what is a good inexpensive shotgun to use for trap shooting?

BTW, am I using the correct term for shooting clays?

That's a weird thing to hear, my Express came with a 28 inch barrel; I have since changed it by sending it to Vang Comp for other work. I can't think of any reason why it would have any problems with a longer barrel.

Sorry can't help you on the clay issue, as I have never gone clay shooting.

I'm not even sure I am calling it the right thing. We had two boxes of clays, some target loads and the clay throwing machine.

Yes you can buy all sorts of 870 barrels from Brownells or Midway. I don't know what the best trap/skeet barrel lengths are...

Agood trap length barrel would be about 28" long. If you are a bigger guy like myself or you have a lot of upper body strength then I would look at a 30 or 32" barrel to slow your swing down. 28" works for most people pretty good though.

Yes, there are lots of barrel options for your 870. If you go with a 28" full choke you should be golden with trap shooting. You might want to replace the 7-shot extension with the standard mag cap since you won't be needing the extended mag for trap, but that's your call.

Trap is a true fun shooting sport, and I have spent many an hour blasting away.

Just buy another shotgun with a 28" barrel and screw in chokes.

If you are just getting started shooting trap a mod choke will work better for you to about the 20 or 21 yard line.

              Good luck
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

                Randy,

You are correct but buying a new shotgun is not in the cards at the moment unless it was not possible to get a second barrel.

A second barrel will cost you almost as much as the entire shotgun.

I can get a shotgun with a 28" barrel for $174? I would prefer a Remington as well.

                    28" barrel

                    30" barrel

Both are $174 dollars with my C&R and no 10 day wait.

I have the same gun. I just got a 28" Mossberg barrel from these folks for $90: http://www.havlinsales.com/ (look in "closeout barrels"). It works just fine.

I didn't like the way the gun balanced with the extended magazine so I got a regular spring and magazine cap from my gunsmith. Much better now.
