Top folding stock for Mossberg 500

I am going to be building up an 870 as the new HD shot gun and figure I might as well have some fun with the Mossberg 500.

What are your favorite top folding stocks for a Mossberg 500 that shall be a "trunk gun"/boat gun?

The two that come to mind are...

Blackhawk/Knoxx Specops Top Folder w/ Recoil Reduction for $99.99

    ...or...

ATI Top Folding Stock w/ Shell Holder for $63.99

That ATI feels cheap, never shot it though. The knoxx's recoil reduction works, but I think the folded config is still large and might defeat the purpose of folding in the first place.

Can't say I agree about the observations about the Knoxx being "too large". It reduces length significantly when folded and tucks away nicely. It's not a tiny little pistol grip, but its not a full size stock either. It is a compromise between the two.

I have the ATI top folder for one gun that needs to be packed in a small area. While it does feel cheap, it certainly works. I no longer have concerns about it breaking or anything like that.

That said, it has the least comfortable cheek weld ever. I'd actually go with "hurts your face". I've learned to hover my face a bit and use more of the side than pressing down on it. Given the role that these are designed for(lots of storing, not a lot of shooting), I'm not worried about it as it fulfills my other requirements.

There is a company that makes a metal version of the stock, similar to the real Remington one, but I couldn't find a link to it.

If you plan on shooting it regularly, you might consider a side folder or one of the collapsible AR-style stocks, something that feels like a real stock when deployed.

My collapsible knoxx hurt that face when shooting slugs, then I stopped using the damned bead.

A big downside to any kind of non standard stock setup on the Mossberg 500, such as the stock you've mentioned, is that it becomes very difficult to manipulate the safety. It can be done, just not real fast.

As for top folders, they hurt (a lot) when you fire anything stouter than birdshot. My first experience with a top folder was with the Remington 870 "Law Enforcement Only" top folder many, many years ago when that was the state of the art high tech SWAT shotgun setup. I think I still have the dent in my cheek and my shoulder still hurts when it gets foggy. All bad.

This is a honkin' Choate. They're all compromises. Safety? Put a Snap Cap in the chamber, fire, and put it aside, no safety. When you need it, pump and go...

So on a shotgun with a standard tube feed, it is legal to add a folding stock? What about a collapsible stock?

i'm not the man when it comes to aftermarket accessories for shotguns but... i love the mesa tactical telescopic stock with buffer that i put on my 870P. i picked it up from one of our members from the forum lnib at a considerable discount.

Thanks, PRC. It's hard to keep track of everything.

You can look for (Although they can be hard to find) the Tri-Star Cobra top folder

It's an all metal top folding stock just like the Remington LEO one, but fits on Mossbergs... It actually looks exactly like the Remington one...

But like I said they are hard to find.

                              I'm considering a Knoxx Recoil-Reduction stock.
