Low Recoil 00 Buckshot - pattern review

Saw this on another forum. Not a professional test, but a basic one that shows good detail between Fiocchi, Federal, and Hornady low recoil 00 buckshot.

I Recently acquired some of the Fiocchi reduced recoil shells and thought I would test it out against some of the Federal Flite Control and Hornady TAP that I have. Please bare with me this is the first time I've tried to review ammo,or really anything for that matter.

The specs:
Gun - remington 870 express w/18" police barrel, cylinder bore
Ammo (all info from boxes)
- Fiocchi (12LE00BK), 2.75", reduced recoil, 9 nickel plated 00 pellets, 1150 fps
- Federal (LE13300), 2.75" reduced recoil, 8 copper plated 00 pellets, 1145fps
- Hornady TAP (#8626), 2.75", reduced recoil, 9 00 pellets, 1100fps




First Impression:

The Fiocchi Shells are slightly smaller in length than the Federal but slightly larger than the TAP. I had never noticed the difference in size before. and I discovered that I can get 7 of the TAP and Fiocchi in my SG but only 6 of the Federal.

The results

Results:
I fired two rounds of each, one at 7 yards and one at 15 yards. I figured at 3 yards they would all just be holes and were I live I will not have an unobstructed line of sight past 15 yards, unless I am outside, so I didn't pattern them out at 3 and 25 yards.


Fiochhi @ 7yds (~ 3.75")


Federal @ 7yds (~ 1.75")

TAP @ 7yds (~1")


Fiocchi @ 15yds (~ 11.5")


Federal @ 15yds (~ 3")

TAP @ 15yds (~ 4.5")


During shooting I noticed that the Fiocchi shells did not eject as forcefully as the federal or the TAP and even had two hang up and sort of bobble out of the gun. Not sure if this has something to do with the softer hulls or what but they definately did not eject as well as the others. I had no problems feeding any of the shells. I also noticed that the felt recoil was lighter on the Fiocchis and the TAP as compared to the Federal.

Overall I dont think the Fiocchi are bad although the ejection issue gives me pause. They spread significantly more than the others but for HD distances i'm guessing it would be adequate, some may even appreciate the wider pattern to increase the probability that at least some pellets will hit their mark

man those federals sure did not want to spread out... the pattern at 15yard is still so tight.

Great review... I just ordered a case of the federal and am glad I did! Tap looks promising as well, will have to check that out too

Fiochi patterns about the same out of my Mossberg 500 18" barrel
