    Pump action pumps itself?

My dad and I were at the range shooting slugs today and noticed that both his Remington 870 and my Mossberg 500 partially pump themselves. When shooting from a sandbag the shotgun will be supported forward of the pump, both hands on the pistol grip. When fired the slide will come nearly all the way back almost ejecting the spent round.

Is this normal? Sure doesn't seem like it!

I want to see a picture of exactly how the gun was sitting in the rest(s) and how it was being held by the shooter.

it happens if your not holding the pump it should be ok since the pressure is all gone by the time it unlocks

Well let me try to paint a picture...
We were zeroing the ghost ring sights for 100 meters with slugs.
We had wooden blocks cut with a u shape to act as a support. front of the magazine tube was laid into this u shaped cut. No hands were forward of the pistol grip-just like Ive always zeroed my rifles. So the weapon is supported at the shoulder, the pistol grip, and at the end of the mag tube.

This can be a good thing.
If you have a good hold on the fore-grip, with a little bit of rearward pressure, you can almost make your pump act like a semi-auto. All you have to do is practice moving the fore-grip forward quickly.

It wouldn't blow up in your face but I could imagine it would hurt if the recoil hit you. Next time take a video if you can I wouldn't mind see this.

Does the 870 say "speedpump" on the side?
you don't rise to the occasion,
you just fall back on your level of training.

Winchester 1200/1300s advertised this as a feature. IIRC it was called 'speed pump'.

                        I still prefer "slam fire"

I'm in my AK phase right now so shotguns have to wait.

No, sure doesn't. Did Mossberg ever advertise a "speed pump" because my 500 does the same thing!

So no one else has ever noticed their guns doing this? Ill probably go to the range next week so Ill try to get a vid.

If your operating the the weapon correctly then all pumps do this. The heavier the load the further back the action comes. It really becomes evident with the recoil reducing stocks such as the SpecOps. The key is that you have keep the rythem of the action coming back and ride it back smoothly. If you interupt it and move the action forward in the least you may fail to pick up a round on the carrier and load an empty chamber.

On the other hand if you have a death grip on the forend and are fighting the weapon and locking it up it may not, thus, my above statement "Operating the weapon correctly". I can tell the shooters who are doing this simply by watching the action of the weapon and the speed they are firing. The guys that ride with the action are some of the fastest pump shooters out there and yes, they shoot their pumps as fast as others shoot a semi-auto. The guys that fight the action can't be having any fun.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

yes its normal. If you are not holding on to the actual pump grip of the shotgun the recoil will do that.
