Okay, it's been discussed before, so don't hate me for it, but short barreled side by side shotguns are among the coolest things out there. What do you guys think of the logistics of getting ahold of one classified as an AOW in CA? I know that there have been a few of these shotguns in the past (Ithaca Auto & Burglar comes to mind), but there aren't any production models currently availible. Is there a way to obtain virgin SxS receivers that can be built into AOW's? If so then I would imagine it would be possible to build one from the ground up. If not, then are there any companies that do builds like these? Are there any that might be willing to? Or am I just bringing up yet another thing that we'll never be able to own?

Yeah I got it, but this hasn't been brought up much as of late, and I was wondering if there was any new insight. The other day I saw a thread about Saiga AOW's and it got me thinking that there may be more options than we thought.
Serbus are pretty sweet, but nothing beats that SxS look. I never really thought about the Receivers being DROS'd. I have the option of buying firearms outside of CA, being an out-of-state college student, if that would make any difference, although NFA manufacturing is sticky territory and I'm not really sure I want to try to buy a gun out of state then deal with transferring it into CA. I'd just buy an SBS, but I plan on permanently moving back to CA when school's done, not to mention the annoyance of having to part with my gun every summer. How do dealers get these virgin receivers? I would LOVE an over under AOW. When they were doing C&R AOW's I was scrambling for a C&R O/U.

I've never seen a side by side that came from the factory with a pistol grip only. I doub't anyone ever made one, since it is a sporting design and the pistol grip is a tactical thing.
Unless the BATF changes its mind on the C&R thing, your only option might be to find someone to custom build you one from a virgin receiver.Comment

Pretty much, if it is a C&R, they are not approving C&Rs as SBRs or SBS. Another Calgunner and I were talking about this and the answer he got from "the man" was that it would change the C&R status since you are changing the original configuration.
I was thinking of going the C&R SBS route but after I found this out, kinda lost the love for it.
The only options you have if you are SXS aow is have someone build you one from the ground up. But also remember you have to have a way to get it approved too so I am not sure what you are doing in that light.

SxS and O/U AOWs are virtually impossible to get/make because there are no PG-only host guns or virgin receivers available. Pretty much all of the SxS and O/U production is done overseas now, so ATF's sporting purposes import regs basically require them to come into the country with a shoulder stock attached, which makes them off limits for AOW builds.
A small bunch of stripped receivers made it into the country a few years ago and that is the basis a small number of "modern" SxS AOWs. M24armorer went to SHOT a couple years ago and talked to every manufacturer/importer of SxS and O/U shotguns to see if he could get a PG-only version. He even offered to pay for a production run. No dice, either they weren't interested, or they would run afoul of the import regs.
Probably your only choice would be to buy one of those imported SxS's, strip off the parts and reverse engineer a new receiver. That receiver could be the host for an SxS AOW.Jack

Ah, so someone has attempted to get one custom built before. I was thinking today that, if I really wanted to, I could try to find someone to mill me a receiver, but that might be a little much just to own a short shotgun. I don't know the first thing about manufacturing firearms, so I'd likely use the wrong grade steel and have a shotgun that explodes on me anyway. There is the option of demilling, but I seriously doubt that I could torch cut a shotgun receiver into four pieces and be left with anything more than some unusable melted garbage. I guess I could always just chop it to the legal limit, but at that point I might as well just leave it full length, because an 18 inch barrel really does not seem short enough to be particularly exciting.
So noone knows of anyone who makes custom shotguns in the U.S? That is unfortunate...Comment
