So apparently theres going to be a huge Pan Am shotgun world cup event going down in August, so SSA (Shooting Sports Alliance) has oriented their stages to be shotgun friendly, for some of the seasoned shooters to train on. I've gone to two of these matches so far, and I have to say that they are a blast! If you've been to an Allsafe defense basic shotgun course, you'll know that shooting steel is a lot of fun.
SSA Has a lot of very different and creative stages to shoot.
So far, the ones that I have been to have all been on the first sunday of each month. I'm not sure if they're going to extend it into the 3rd or 5th sundays, but so far I know for sure that the first sunday matches will be shotgun friendly.
Check out http://www.ssashooter.com/ for more details.
Note: I am not affiliated with SSA, nor do I represent them. Just another calgunner trying to let people know about readily available fun!
Things to know:
-SSA Steel Madness is held at Mike Raahauge's shooting enterprises in Corona (Right next to SC Village for you paintball types)
-Most if not all stages will be shot with birdshot. From experience, I recommend #7.5 and larger, preferably shot out of a modified or tighter choke, I had some trouble with my open cylinder bore.
-Bring around 200 rounds of ammo
-Most stages have between 6-30 targets, be sure you bring something that will allow you to carry that many shells at a time.
-Bring WATER or a drink, I was dying of thirst the first match
-I recommend Sun block or a hat, I got burned pretty bad this past sunday, it's getting hotter.
-bring a range bag or rolling crate to lug your gear so you don't need to go back to the car for each stage
-Bring a shot timer if you have one. I think the SSA folk also have some if you don't have one.
-Calgunners get a discount! Be sure to let them know you're a calgunner when you check in!
If you have any questions, feel free to post, or PM.
If you're interested in going to the next match (Likely June 6th) and need a group/party, Let me know, I am sure we can fit a few more in!
Sorry for such a long post, but I'm still coming down from the excitement I experienced from yesterday.
