From the US Code (on www.atf.gov)...

"(5) The term "shotgun" means a weapon designed or redesigned, made
or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of an explosive to fire
through a smooth bore either a number of ball shot or a single projectile for
each single pull of the trigger.

(6) The term "short-barreled shotgun" means a shotgun having one or
more barrels less than eighteen inches in length and any weapon made from a shotgun (whether by alteration, modification, or otherwise) if such weapon as modified has an overall length of less than twenty-six inches"

You're asking about a shotgun with buttstock...with a barrel <26", you've created a "short barreled shotgun, aka 'sbs'"...a no-no of the felony grade in the PRK.

With a number of restrictions, you can create a pistol-gripped sg with a barel <18", but that's not what you asked about...search AOW here or on google.

Assuming a barrel less than 16 inches but with a device (Cutts Compensator, Breacher) permanently attached that makes the total unit longer than 18 inches, then that would also be a legal configuration where the barrel itself is under 16 inches.

At least as I understand it.

The receiver of AOW shotgun was never made to have a stock on it.It has to start out as a virgin receiver and then make the build.

They pretty much covered it. There is an exception for Curio and Relic shotguns. I do not know the exact details. If you search for it, you will find more than one thread explaining the ins and outs of it.

Actually they aren't approving the C&R stuff anymore. I was talking to a guy who was applying for a trust so he can make a sbs. I mentioned he should just go the C&R route and he let me know they said once you changed the firearm i.e. cutting it, it won't be c&r anymore and won't be approved.

This is exactly how it was explained to me by another Calgunner who already has a trust and doing the sbs thing.
