    Getting an 870 refurbished

Ok I have an 870 that I am about to start refurbishing, I have budgeted about $250 for the build. Currently I am trying to make this a nice HD weapon. It needs a cleaning and probably Durocoated Black or maybe OD Green? I am trying to get the most "bang for my buck". I will be buying parts used when I can. The 870 has a PG and I will be replacing the foregrip and PG with a used set of synthetic stocks off here fine site. What do I need to make this an awesome boom stick? Please list what you/I would/should do and prices if possible. I would like to have the receiver drilled & tapped to add ghost ring sights down the road if it doesn't fit into the budget. Oh one last thing is stamped on the receiver it says for 2 3/4 shells only, do I need to up it to 3"?
    Thanks!

Already have a line on new syn. stock and FG, just need to find out what a cleaning and Durocoat is going to cost. Then I will be going from there will the remaining $.

If you're so concerned about cost why are you so worried about the finish? Make it functional the way you want. Criminals aren't going to compliment you on your pretty weapon, and you will only get a chance to use it once.

you should be able to buy one new for that price. 870 is an entry level(bottom end) shotgun.

its a buyer market right now.

depspite what a lot of noobs think a shotgun( other than browning, barreta, etc) lose 50% when you walk out the door. $300 brand new= $150.

don't fall into the moron class because you are desperate with your first shotgun

If you are planning to use this shotgun for home defense I would suggest a light and budget some of that money for ammunition and TRAINING. A side saddle is not a bad idea as the thing about shotguns is that you need to keep them fed to keep them running.

If this is strictly an HD shotgun, a ghost ring set up most likely is not really necessary. A nice fiber optic or tritium front bead is a better choice for truly close quarters.

Hogue stock and fore end are perhaps the best low cost alternative for re-stocking. The reduced length of pull (12 inch) stock from Hogue is the shizzle if you want a nice compact package that will handle well on top of body armor and / or heavy clothing... or if you are smaller in stature with short arms.

If you are bound and determined to re-finish the gun and barrel, consider having them parkerized. Dura-coat is cool and all, but I'm not 100% sold on long haul durability. Having a gun parkerized is generally not that expensive and will last darned near forever when done right.

+1 to some type of light and a side saddle. While most gunfights in HD situations don't last very long, there is some comfort in the idea of having an extra four to six rounds beyond whats in the mag tube.

              +1000 to practice and training.

Oh one last thing is stamped on the receiver it says for 2 3/4 shells only, do I need to up it to 3"?
If it's a 2 3/4 inch specific receiver, there is no way to stretch it for 3 inch shells. You would need a different gun. That said, using 3 inch magnum shells in an HD gun isn't really necessary. 12 pellet 2 3/4 00 Buck will do just as good a job as 15 pellet 3 inch 00 Buck, and won't beat you up nearly as much.

I wouldnt say it is strictly a HD weapon but I would like to have some tacticool items. The gun has a 6 shell side saddle that I will probably reuse as long as the plastic isnt too brittle.

From a shop local to me.....

                        Parkerizing Services:
One lot of small parts (roughly 6" cubed): $60.
One complete firearm (does not include time for disassembly and reassembly): $100.
And this shop does not do Dura-Coat or similar.

A quick bit of Google found me this ship in Arizona, as an exemplar.

let me get this straight. you want to put $250 into a $150 gun (and this doesn't even include your time or gas money) and if you ever get it all done you'll have a $4-500 used entry level gun that they are selling a better version of, brand new, on this gunshop websight for $319.

                              never mind.
