Rifled Slugs from smooth bore Rem. 870, OK?

    Hello all,
Like the title says, does it really matter if my 870 is a smooth bore and I pick up some rifled slugs? I figure it really would give me any advantage or disadvantage.

    Thanks
Thank you, Answered in second post. I was unaware of this.

Um. Rifled slugs are designed for smooth bore shot guns, so your question doesn't make any sense.

It will be totally fine to shoot rifled slugs through your 870.

Doesn't that depend upon what choke is being used? My understanding is that rifled slugs can only safely be fired out of a cylinder bore choke. A tighter (i.e. more restricted choke) is an invitation to a burst barrel and possible injury to the shooter.

Whoa ive never heard of that personally, but I do know that when shooting foster type slugs through a smoothbore that you want to use a cylinder bore or an improved cylinder type choke to achieve better accuracy.

Agreed... IC or less choke for rifled slugs. Particularly in you are shooting through choke tubes.

While you might not burst a full choke barrel the first time, it's not going to be good for the overall life of the gun. Extra full or turkey choke... fuggedabowdit.

Box of Remington rifled slugs I bought says something similar to the following on the side of the box: "Remington rifled slugs can be safely fired through a barrel with any choke, but maximum accuracy is achieved with improved cylinder." It also has a chart showing that the slugs should be "dead on" at 50 yards, and then lists how far it drops past 50.

i hit a paper target dead center in the neck from a 135 yards with my mossberg 500 from Big 5. I Don't know what kind of barrel I have but i know there isn't a choke, so maybe IC. Used a 2 3/4" rifled slug, Winchester Rifled Slugs Power-Point 1700 FPS. I aimed for the head but the neck was just as good.

btw: Rifled Slugs are good for Smooth Bore. Sabot Slugs are good for Rifled Barrels.

That's one hell of a shot! How much did it drop? I'm thinking head to neck, maybe 3 or 4 inches? Iron sights or scope? Were you shooting off of a bench rest? Even if you were, that's still impressive!

It dropped about 2 inches. I have an A1-Optic 1x42mm Red Dot. I was standing, shotguns were not meant to be shot from a bench as my shoulder found out from a 3" slug . Or maybe i don't have the right setup.

TBH, that was my best shot of the day. the rest of the time i was getting 2 inch groupings either at the head or chest center mass at 135 yards, that's still pretty good i think.

BTW: Birdshot bounces off PVC Pipes at 135 Yards. Thought i'd let you know

2 inch groups from a non rifled barrel at 135 yards? That's excellent, I'd say. My rifled barrel for my 870 should be coming in the mail the end of this week, I need to get some kind of optic for it. I've heard sabot slugs will group out pretty well up to 150 yards. I'm eager to find out! Point taken on the birdshot Did you shoot any 00 buck loads?

Yeah, Sabot Slugs + Rifled Barrels are suppose to be a lot more accurate than Rifled Slugs and Smooth Bore but for the sake of shooting bird and buck without swapping barrels a smooth bore will have to do.

as for an optic, i'd recommend the A1 that i have, but it's only been to the range once so i can't really vouch for it. But if you want a report. It holds zero, very nice light sensitivity levels, and the lifetime warranty ain't too bad

                            I shot 2 3/4" & 3" 00 Buck. I didn't intentionally aim for PVC though so i can't give you a shot comparison . However the spread of a 2 3/4" 00 Buck was about 5 feet in diameter from 135 yards.
