Need trap gun recommendation please....

The two rifle ranges/clubs I belong to also have facilities for shooting trap. I want to get started in this activity but, don't know where to begin. The one shotgun I have now (a Rem. 870P) is fine for home defense and SHTF scenarios but, not very well suited for trap shooting. I like the Brownings (Citori and Cynergy) and the Berettas. What is a good model to get? I suppose it needs to be an O/U.

Your 870 is a good starter Trap gun....all you need is a field barrel and a Modify or Full choke. There were 5-6 seasoned shooters out ther today with 870's. When you get in the mix, fellow shooters will let you try their shotguns and buy the one you like....and more important , the one you shoot well.

Like Brad said, go shoot a bunch of them before you buy. You should go out with people who can show you the ropes then shoot them all. That's part of the fun, like test driving a bunch of cars, then decide.

Your budget should get you a nice gun.The most important thing is fitting you and feeling right..I shoot a wingmaster,not by choice but by budget. It has been a good gun now for over a year and the more I shoot the better I get..My point is It is not the gun it is the shooter and the time you put into it.. Go out and have fun and try as many guns as you can .you will know when the right one hits your hands.

If you just want to shoot American trap only, try Browning BT-99. For the price and value, it is hard to beat. If you want to go with O/U, I would go with a Beretta.

Your range may well have the guns you listed for rent. Ask them. I was hot to trot to buy an O/U and bought one and I don't like it as much as my old 1100. It's turned into another project gun, which is STILL ok (cause I LIVE for project guns), but if the gun doesn't "pop up" on target you're going to hate trap!!! (and skeet).

See if the range has some "range guns". That way you'll know if they fit you. Otherwise, go to your local gun room and see if your "favorites" actually fit you. When the gun comes up to your shoulder the beads should be in alignment, one stacked over the other like a figure 8. Just ONE of many things to consider, but an important one.

Consider a semi-auto in your tests. They don't beat you up like an O/U (especially if your old and already beat up like me!!!!!)

Browning, Beretta, Caesar Guerini all make good guns in your price range.

If I were you, I'd shoot a TON of trap BEFORE you buy a dedicated trap gun.

For that money you may be able to find a Browning Broadway Trap gun. It will continue to appreciate until the end of time. Something that can't be said about most of the other guns that have been mentioned. One of the all time great classic trap guns, and as perfect as perfect gets.
