    Vang Comp +2 mag extension

Hello everyone. I just received a +2 mag extension for my 870 and noticed that it's really hard to screw on. I could screw it about halfway by hand and then it won't go any further. I had to use a wrench to screw it down the rest of the way. Is this how it's supposed to be? I was under the assumption that the mag extension would screw all the way down easily just like the stock mag cap. Does Vang Comp deliberately make his extensions a super tight fit for stability?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

That only happens on few 870s. Sometimes the threads on a particular shotgun don't mess with a certain tube extension. I believe it's how the first thread is cut, on both.

Try another tube ext, same brand, it should screw right on.

Thanks for the input. This is actually the 2nd extension that Vang sent to me since I sent the first one back for replacement. I thought there was a problem with the first one but the replacement has the same tightness. I'll just remember to keep a wrench in my range bag just in the unlikely event that I ever need to take it off at the range.

        I had the same problem

I had the same problem with a Wilson +1, only I have a Hawk 982 (870 clone). I thought the threads may have been mismatched, but thanks to the advise of many, including Max100, I did the following:

Clean the threads inside the extension and on the mag tube with a brass or stainless gun cleaning "toothbrush" and some Hoppes or other gun cleaning liquid. Wipe it out well and then lubricate the extension threads with a light oil. This allowed me to screw the extension on and off a little at a time until it went full on and seated against the barrel lug. It now goes on and comes off as easily as the factory nut.

Since you already managed to screw it all the way on, the above method should enable you to smooth it up and go on like the factory nut.

gee teflondog, these small trials and tribulations can be frustrating at times.... i don't know; i got a wilson +2 extension with left side sling holder and the fit was perfect on my remington 870P police model. i have never been more impressed with the fit of an addition to a gun. the fit was snug but totally hand tightened....

In regards the Wilson extension with the sling plate, I also have the one with the left side plate and it would not rotate freely around the extension, in fact it would not budge. I had to use some Breakfree and alot of hand pressure on it to get it to rotate. I think the parkerizing on these extensions tends to cause them to sieze up (and not screw on easily) until you clean them up and lubricate them prior to installation.

I know this thread is about making Vang work on your shotgun, but I have to say that I've been nothing but 100% satisfied with the nordic comp +2 extension I put on my supernova. The tolerances are tight, it screwed on smoothly and holds up perfectly. With the spring cut to 12" I can reliably run 7+1 2 3/4 inch shells too.

Browse a HUGE selection of hunting rifles & shotguns, gun parts, gunsmithing tools, reloading equipment, ammo, and more! Brownells: Since 1939

Perhaps it'll work as well on an 870?

That's good but it could be the threads on shotgun that's giving the OP problems and not the Vang tube extension. Vang makes high quality products.

wyattearp my wilson left side plate was stiff out of the package as well but with some spray and hand pressure freed itself in a bit; after that it was like a bug in a rug....

So is this a possible inconsistency in the 870 manufacturing process? I'd been lead to believe that Remington was producing a quality product.

Just an update: I tried thoroughly cleaning the threads on both the extension and my 870 but I still require a wrench to screw the extension all the way down. I used some calipers and found that the extension diameter is a few thousands smaller than the mag tube. I'm sure I can easily polish out the extension to open it up but I don't think it's that big of a deal since I won't be taking it off very often. It's a well made extension and I'm willing to bet that it would fit perfectly on any other 870 but mine. I believe that's just the nature of manufacturing variances.

You might try using lapping compound with a light oil, but be sure the tubes are completely free from grit before final assembly.
