Shotgun slugs vs humans?

Has anyone (leo) or otherwise seen what a 1oz slug will do to a human target? Wouldn't they pass through any part of the body? I've shot a slug through a 1/2" of steel, so I'd guess that they wouldn't stop in a body.

up to 20 yards the 1 oz 12 ga slug has one of the best stopping powers around.

alaskan bear guides used to use them regularly as back up to the hunter. probaly still do.

if you wound the griz i put you on i would want nothing less to protect my azz

I've seen it go thru a full grown bear. In from shoulder, out the rib cage. I tell you, the bear dropped and blood came out as if you cut the top of a gallon milk jug filled with blood and pouring it out.

If it's that lethal on a bear I'm sure it'll have no problem with a human body.

Depends on where you hit the human being, how far away you are, and what type of slugs you are using.

Generally speaking though slugs can pass through a human target. The level of trauma caused is tremendous.

I posted on another thread what I saw in the ER. A man was shot with a slug through a car door. It penetrated left to right at about nipple line. It shattered his left arm, and destroyed both lungs, his heart and stopped on the right side. He was DOA. His chest x Ray showed massive tissue damage. Very impressive.

I've seen autopsy photos of a wound from a rifled slug from about 15 yards IIRC... the damage is massive. Without first getting through some kind of a barrier, as luchador768 notes in his story above, a slug would nearly always through and through a human target.

Well, I was going to say that slugs through a shotgun would just be messy while attempting to squeeze a human down the barrel might be a bit of a challenge...

I haven't seen anybody shot with a slug. I have friends that have used them quite a bit for vermin removel (two legged). One of thm called slugs the magic bullet.

Is it safe to say that slugs would be out of the question for home defense due to over-penetration? Personally, I keep 00 Buck for HD but, I always wondered if slugs were a better choice.

slugs will penetrate pretty much anything, take that however you want, i have 3 sidesaddle on my rem but shot in the tube, if i ever have to use the gun i know that i wont have to worry if i might take out one of my neighbors 5 walls away... because a slug will do that! after going through the intended target
