A Serbu Super Shorty is an AOW.
In CA, any non-prohibited person can purchase an AOW, however they will need BATFE approval prior to being able to obtain one.
Quick summary.
#1. Find a CA FFL/SOT dealer
#2. Pay for the Serbu Super Shorty
#3. Submit a Form 4 to the BATFE
#4. Wait for BATFE approval (2-6 months)
#5. After BATFE approval, complete transfer (4473/DROS/10 day wait) of the Serbu Super Shorty.
#6. Enjoy your CA legal AOW.sigpic

Don't know of any NFA dealers up that way that deal with the public, but there one or two in SoCal that will be dealing in AOWs soon. And if you can't get a CLEO signoff, you can go the trust/corp option with is exempt from the signoff.Jack
Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

$5 to transfer (Form 4)
$200 to make (Form 1)
Don't know of a FFL/SOT in NorCal, but I believe there is one in the Bay area.
Most people go the trust/corporation route in order to bypass the CLEO sign off. Since, the CLEO sign off is near impossible to obtain.sigpic

Form 1 does not apply in this case. Since Serbu is an 02SOT, they can make as many NFA items (except for DDs) as they wish, tax free. the just have to report the manufacture of the NFA items to the NFA branch on a Form 2. Then, it gets transfered to your local NFA dealer on a tax-exempt Form 3. Then, it gets transfered to the buyer on a tax-paid Form 4. $5 in this instance for an AOW.Jack

If you are a LEO, you could potentially be issued this type of weapon by your department if your job required it, but it would be department property.
A sign-off by your chief could get you a personally registered AW, but not a federally controlled item like an AWO, SBS, SBR, etc. For this, you need the tax stamp from the BATFE.Comment

If your chief is the CLEO where you live (you work for the city that you live in, or work for the county in which you live in), that sign-off by the chief could let you get the tax stamp for that AOW.Jack
