    Big 5 Mossberg Combo

Is the Mossberg that's seen in the Big 5 ads with a 28" vent rib and a 18.5" extra barrel a 500 model? Anyone have this combo? What do you think of it? It's in today's paper for $279; I'm guessing that's a decent price.

That's how much I paid....about as low as I've seen it. Just get it.

Yes, it's a 500 but I believe it uses the new forend components of the 88; could be wrong though.

IT looks like a good deal, I'd buy it.

it is a great deal. you get the versatility of home defense with your short barrel, and you have a clay killer with the long barrel! vent rib with the bead sight. and of course you get the reliability of a mossberg which is legendary.

i would have purchased this combo last week but i found a killer deal on a 590 A1 instead. i could not pass it up

There was one for sale here for $225 (I think). Why not see if it's still available.

When I saw the ad today, I just thought of it when I saw the $279 price and said that's expensive. They're usually $259 - $269 on most other weeks.

When you're ready to buy one, check around the Good Deals forum for any current Big 5 coupons. Most of the time, the coupon will cover sales tax or more.

/\/\ I do remember seeing them for 10 or 20 bucks cheaper IIRC just a couple of weeks ago.

I'll just hold off on Starbucks for a week or two and that will make up the difference.

I have one, and yes it's a 500. They are nice, reliable shotguns and it's darn near like getting two for the price of one. The 28" barrel has a screw in choke and the 18.5 barrel comes with a cylinder bore. Use a Big 5 coupon like what I used from this thread: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=276677

The one that was valid a couple of weeks ago was for 20% off any item and 10% off any sale item. This time I bought a Reminington Security 7 shot/18.5" barrel shotgun.

I've seen it cheaper also. Holding out for an XD though so I won't be buying one anytime soon but they do seem to jump up and down on their prices almost quarterly.
I bought my benelli nova tactical for 349 and have seen it on sale every other week since I bought it in feb but not nearly that low.

Ya, they call it a 500 (and the receiver is), but it's basically a Maverick-88.
                        OTC 500 fore-end parts won't fit.

+1 Go get it. Not sure about the screw in choke though. Mine is fixed. Don't worry about the Mav fore-end. It'll last years.

It is a 500a and you will want to replace the forend. It can be a bit sticky when you rack it. You will probably want to replace it so think about it when you buy. Will you use the 28 in. barrel?
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

                              What's the difference between a 500a and a regular 500?

The forend is a bit sticky...?

My plan is to use the shot 18.5" barrel for HD and some defensive SG classes I may take (plus any general "blasting" I may do) and to use the 28" for clays and if happen to go bird hunting w/ some guys from work.
