Shotguns, which one?

I did a research, and now, I'm going to buy a Shotgun:
1. Remington 870 - $319 /Big5 sale + 10% coupon/ valid till April 3
or
2.Benelli Nova -340 /Big5 sale 20% coupon/ valid coupon till April 3

Which one? and why?

Any recommendation from owners and professional armorers?

Military battle proven and police proven is what you get from a Mossberg and a Remington. (dont know jack about the stoeger?)

Both will serve your home defense needs fine. What ever shotgun you do get, invest in training and learn how to fight with it properly. Remember having a guitar slung on your shoulder doesnt mean you know how to play it.

Same thing goes with the shotgun. People just dont take the time to train on them and thats why pumps CAN be so unreliable. Not because of the gun but because stress and adrenaline cause noobs to short shuck and cause a failure to eject or chamber a new round...and bam your dead.

Also, its preference. Some dont like the spring loaded shell carrier of the Remington. It can bite you on reloads? Some dont like the Remingtons slide release being way up front or the safety behind the trigger?

Some dont like the tang safety on the Mossberg when running pistol grip stocks. Some dont like the rough around the edges build quality of the Mossberg.

After owning both I went with a gun that had everything I ever wanted (at a price of course)...and I got me a Benelli SuperNova Tactical. I knew what features I wanted and where I wanted the controls.

Figure that out what features you want then you can make a better decision on which shotgun to go with. Like I said pretty much any pump shotgun will make devastating holes in bad guys either way you slice it.

My vote is 870. Of course then that leaves open a whole second debate...what will it be used for & what is your budget?

If you have no plans to hunt or shoot clays...go straight for a HD version. If you want flexibility, mine is stored with an 18.5" HD barrel and ammo cuff that I can easily convert in a minute by swapping for the choked vent rib barrel.

Simply put you have options...lots. You can go straight to high end, or start with an 870 express and easily replace components and add accessories to fit your needs/desires.

I predict the most common advice to be:

"Get both a Remington 870 & Mossberg 590 in your hands and go with what feels right...you can't go wrong with either."

If you eventually want a pistol grip, an 870 would be more practical considering the safety is near the trigger finger. The 870 is also very sailor proof as far as field stripping. I am biased. I use an 870 at work and I got one at home.

870, it's the most common shot-gun ever, and with no other pump offering any real advantages, why look elsewhere? I may be biased because I have more than a couple of them.

The 590 is a great gun as well, and I would trust a new one with my life. However, and it's a big however, a friend of mine has one with maybe 15-20k shells through it, and it's done, needs to have everything but the stock replaced, seen plenty of 870s with many more rounds function as well as brand new ones. I believe the problem is the same as with Taurus pistols, the tolerances just don't start out as tight, so it takes a few thousand fewer rounds to get to the point that it's too worn out to shoot. Not many people will ever put enough rounds through a gun to wear it out, but if you shoot a lot, you just mite.

For a standard stock, mossberg 500 due to the location of the safety and slide release. I can reach the safety with my thumb if I ever needed to operate it, and I can move the slide release with my middle finger since it's behind the trigger guard. The location of the safety sucks when used with a pistol grip, and I'm not too sure on the slide release.

With a pistol grip, the 870 again due to the position of it's safety and slide release. With the hand position using a pistol grip, the controls are easier to get to than the standard stock(for me anyway).

Also remember that with 870's you can get magazine extensions, I remember seeing one for the 500 but it involved a new barrel, some machining, and I just wouldn't ever bother with it.

The 870 clone, AKA Hawk 982. With the exception of the barrel every part is interchangeable. Owners have nothing but good things to say about them, others are annoyed that they're made in China, although that doesn't bother Remington, since they own a company that distributes them in the USA.

Use a Big 5 coupon and you should be able to buy one for about $180 since Big 5 will usually match their last sale price.

I think the Nova/Super-Nova line has a lot of positives even when compaired to my 870s and Mossberg. Here's a couple: rotating locking bolt, 2.75-3.5 capacity, shell feed lock out, shell lifter stays up during loading, superior corrosion resistance, plus super easy to take apart. They can feel a bit plasticy but once you get past that (think Glock) they really offer a lot for the money.

i have a benelli M1 Super 90 and recently acquired a remington 870P. the benelli super nova still looks good to me....

Mossberg 500.
Carried one in the sandbox and I liked it so much I bought one when I got back here.

Barrel locking mechanism allows for aluminum reciever=lighter weapon.
Aftermarket support equal to 870.
Does everything any other pump does but is mostly cheaper (mine was 200) and lighter.
