    important shotgun accessories?

    hey calgunners...

i just bought my first ever shotgun, a 12-gauge Remington 870 Wingmaster. it'll come in 10 days. however, i need to know what are some great accessories that i should get for this shotgun?

i'm primarily going to use this gun for 3-gun, some trap and skeet shooting, eventually waterfowl hunting, rabbit hunting, and i guess just about EVERYTHING?

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

Mag extension to hold 9 rounds for 3 gun. If you bought a gun with a 28"barrel its not a good 3 gun gun.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

            Sling

Side saddle - the ones by Mesa Tactical are awesome high quality metal. Cost more than the TacStar plastic ones but noticably nicer

Light if you see it as having a home defense role. If not, no light required. The highest quality are the Surefire foreneds and they cost as much as the shotgun does.

Outside of that I strongly urge u to spend the money to get training.
RIP Louis Awerbuck. I miss you and your training.

i am not extremely knowledgeable regarding alterations and after market parts. most guns i have owned i have kept as factory delivered. i really try to keep things simple. but i would advise you experience this gun as an operator must; get some training first. you may not want to add a bunch of extra weight to an 870 if you will be carrying it for any distances. i wish i could give you more feedback but i have only owned one 870; an old wingmaster with LEO factory folding stock. what a mistake selling that one....

i should also add that i just recently received my first hunting license this past month, so i'm really asking what kind of hunting shotgun supplies should i stock up on. i'm planning to be hunting rabbit, turkey, and duck.

of course i know the obvious, like shotgun shells, a sling, a case, cleaning equipment, but what else?

                    thanks!

Well, Duck you need to shoot non toxic shot, get it on sale if you can.. My preferences are early season Duck #3 steel, Late season Duck, #2 steel, Geese close in, #2, Geese a bit farther out or very large, BB.. and I had been using Kent Fast Steel but I think the slightly slower 1 1/8 ounce Either Kent or Estate 3" shells pattern better as I had a lot of late season good luck calling/pass shooting with the Estates..

Rabbit generally uses lead 6's unless you hunt a refuge where non toxic is mandated.. then I'd probably use 4 steel.

Turkey is usually a heavy slow load of 4-6.. Pattern density is what you want in general.. I would use the tightest choke you can and pattern it at several distances so you know what it's going to do on a turkey. There are turkey targets where you can see the size of their head and see how likely you are to get a good kill shot with your load.

The hardest part is finding somewhere to go. There is a pretty steep learning curve with hunting.. and it's really best to see if you can find someone to mentor you.

All that being said, if you get your gun up to snuff by the end of June, Richmond is having an action shotgun match the 4th Sunday in June.. lots of different target presentations.. Static and likely moving clays, possible thrown clays after hittiing a steel popper, slugs at up to 45 yards, buckshot allowed, and a whole lot of various sized and positioned steel targets. Should be fun.

Ok here is a little outline for a season of Calif. Hunting
Dove (sept.1st) Ammo size 8 shot promo load OK because you will shoot a lot, Lite camo clothing, in my area its boots shorts t-shirt hat. Camping stool.Upland bird stamp needed
Ducks So Cal. Steel ammo 3" 2's 3's 4's, Duck stamp Cal. Fed Stamp Medium clothing all camo hunt with a friend that has dog.
Central/No Cal. pheasant Lead or steel ammo depending on where you hunt. 6's 3" if you go to a planted field no dog really needed wild area hunt with friend who has a dog upland bird stamp needed. Watch video as to what to wear.
Your 870 wingmaster has removable chock tubes you will use either I/C- Mod on Doves Mod to imp mod on Ducks and pheasants. Mod to full on rabbits, then there is Quail hard to find, chucker lots of work and geese freeze your but off. Good luck enjoy and eat what you shoot.
