My 870 just has a plain bead and since I rarely shoot slugs or for distance, thats all I need.
    ^^^ Good advice ^^^

If the shotgun is strictly for HD and you don't see any realistic instance of taking aimed shots beyond 25 yards or so with slugs, then a good bead is totally sufficient. If your gun has a light, sights become less of a factor as the gun should be shooting exactly where the light goes. Even in total darkness, if you light the bad guy square up, with the gun hip or shoulder, your sights are going to indexed on him.

Ghost rings are sexy but most people are faster on target with a bead.

I have a 930 with a bead, a Benelli with rifle sights, and a 870 Police with GRS. In practice I'm faster on target with the bead first, then the RS, finally the GRS.

The difference in time to target from the bead to the GRS is quite noticeable. The RS are about as fast as the bead.

Go bead. Like I said my bead sighted shorty barrel shoots standard slugs dead on at pistol ranges. This really surprised me.

I recomend a bead sight on any HD or duty weapon. At close quarters it can not be beaten.

The time it takes to die in a gun fight is time it takes for the the other guys primer to ignite and his round to strike you in the chest. So, every nano second you trim off your time is critical.

In no HD scenerio will you need to enguage a target inside your home at any range that requires rifle sights, optic or GR.

An HD shotgun needs to be basic and that means bead sight. Yes, I love the tritium bead sight and it is comfort as I am lying in my bed in a completely dark room and see that thing glowing in the dark. It is my little night light.

I vote for picking up a used plain barrel for cheap

Then take a pipe cutter to her and make her a cylinder bore 18.125 inch blaster

on a HD shotgun a front site is not nececary

you won't be using it at any distAnce over 10 yards

And we have a winner. Bead sight it is. I hate buying something when I feel unsure. Thanks again for the education and opinions.

I believe you, but why the heck do they have one advertised on their web site?!

Rigma, go to any gun shop and look at the box any of the HD or tactical 870's come in. On the Label it will state 18" barrel. Check out the weapon and you will find it is an 18.5" barrel and you will notice that the Remington Tube extension on the weapon ends flush with the barrel. If the tube stuck out 1/2in front of the barrel it would be an 18" barrel. And yes, they made 18" but have not for two years.

Go to the Remington 2010 parts list and you will also see 18" barrels on there for sale. And sales person you talk to will assure you it is an 18" barrel as they are simply reading the computer screen they place your order on. When the barrel gets to you it will have grown 1/2" in shipping.

As to why Remington has not changed their labels, their parts list or their web site over the years, you would have to ask them as I don't have an answer and I doubt anyone you call there will either.
