Pros vs. Cons !!!!!!!!!!!

The con is that alterning the design can damage the weapon. The gas system is specificlly designed to work as it comes installed from the factory. For the prior owner to decide to reverse it, if done delibertly, indicates he thinks he knows more the people who designed it, tested it and have been building it this way for many years.
There would be no need to alter anything on that model for heavier loads. For very light loads there are compensated pistons for light loads only for many gas semi-autos.
You did right to reinstall it correctly.JD McGuire, Owner

The piston should only go one way on an 1100, as mentioned above. Other makes have reversible pistons for heavier and lighter loads, but Remington has a better idea.
The forearm is notched specifically to vent unused gas up and out. Releasing gas and heat as you fire is "as designed".
