Where can I shoot buckshots ?

I'm a block away from Insight Shooting Range where I enjoy going... BUT, they only allow range birdshot ammo.

I have some buckshot that I want to try out (to see the spread at different distances)...

What is the closest range from Insight that I can shoot my own buckshot at?

    thanks!

    What?

I have shot tons of slugs and buckshot at Iron-sights. as recently as January. Is this a new policy? Until now the only restriction was no wolf and no steel shot.

Iron-Sights at Oceanside? (too far from me anyways 65 miles)

I'm talking about Insight Range at Artesia.

Prado Olympic Shooting Park at Chino?

That's also far from Artesia. (30 miles)

            40 miles away.

Is there a closer range that allows buckshot?

I shoot buckshot and slug at Burro. Never had problems there.

Bewteen 35-40 yards, you can expect to get 2 - 3 of the total 9 pellets of a 00 Buck round on a man sized target.

I saw a documentary where they did this same test and that was their result. 00 Buck looses a lot of accuracy at around 35 yards...

It depends highly upon the exact model of shell, and secondly how tightly it patterns in your shotgun.

At 50 yards, my 590A1 puts all or most of 9 pellets from Federal FlightControl 00 or 12 pellets from NobelSport 00 on a man-sized target.

Estate 00 and other rounds seem to pattern much more like the 35-40 yard range quoted.

YMMV ... quite a bit, depending upon shells used.

I pattern my buckshot at SoCal Sharpshooter:

It's a shame Insight prohibits buckshot; I think that's a fairly recent policy with the new owners.

So, to the OP, there's your answer. You can expect anywhere between 35-50 yards of effectiveness from 00 Buck. We just saved you $1 per shot of buckshot...

In a firearms course for shotguns I was taught to expect about one inch per foot spread and it seemed to be true when we shot them. Home this helps.

Here's what I'm looking to test out:

                          870 Remington
Federal Tact 00 Buckshot 9 Pellet (LE 127 00) with Fliteccontrol

I know on paper what the spread would most likely be. Just want to be sure with my aim and shotgun.

Also, when shooting birdshots, it's hard to tell how accurate I am with my aim.

If you're new to shotguns, you can also attend a class. A few Calgunners will be at this one at Burro (private range) on Sunday:

The thread lists several other training options where I'm guessing you can pattern your gun.

I also live near Insight, and never even bothered to take my 870 there because you have to buy and use their cheezy shells.

It seems that you will have to drive somewhere to shoot whatever you want. Angeles Ranges north of Burbank, Prado, Burro, A Place to Shoot in Saugus, etc.

Not as convenient, but alot more fun outdoors than standing in a lane indoors.

On the website, it says that shotguns are allow with birdshots. Maybe the info on the website is old.

Just want to be sure before making the drive.

I wish I could go to the class... my limited free time is during the weekday.
