So I have a M500 with the 18.5" barrel and the last couple times I've gone out to the range I've shot between 2 and 5 slugs out of it, and both times it knocked the bead sight out. One was a 5$ fiber optic bead, and the other was the stock bead. I put one of the clip on sights on there, but it's aligned by the bead. Will not having the bead on there cause it to cant to one side? Or am I fine without the bead? If I need to replace the bead, what can I do to keep it from flying off again?

Mossberg500 Bead sight and Slugs

I don't know why your bead sight falls off. The beads typically screw in and you may just need a new one. Hopefully, the threads on the bead sight were bad and the threads in the barrel are still OK.
Some thread locker (I'd use blue Loctite, not red or green) would be good to use. Use gentle tightening pressure as the screw-in bead could shear off leaving just the threads in the barrel if over-tightening.
I don't know about your aftermarket fiber optic sight.Last edited by L-2; 02-17-2010, 6:37 PM.(former) Glock and 1911 Armorer; LEO (now retired) -
Its funny, I was wondering about this just earlier today. I took the barrel off my Mossberg 500 and looked down it, and noticed the screw for the bead seemed to stick down into the barrel. I wondered if shooting slugs would hit it, and I'm surprised all the birdshot hasn't messed with it either.Blessed are the peacemakersComment

How do slug shoot out of yor gun? If they give you 3 to 5" @ 50 yards shouldn't be a problem with the bead. Don't look at placement, judge goup size.Larry Renner

Just gonna update this thread. I put some red locktite on there...3 slugs later. No more bead sight. It's rather annoying because, without the bead sight, my clip-on fiber sight comes flying off after about 8 shots.Comment

Is yours the plain barrel or the one with a rib? I can't seem to find the problem talked about anywhere on google. Makes me wonder if I should have sprung the extra $50-100 for the 870 or 590 instead of the 500. Little disappointing.Comment

When I still had the bead sight on my 500(plain 18.5" security barrel), I had shot over 100 slugs through it without problems. I think probably your particular gun has some kind of issue, and that's why nothing shows up on Google. Why not call Mossberg and see what they have to say?Comment

I have a 590 and after about 25 slugs I had no issues with the bead. I then took it off myself, and it seemed to have acted like a mini muzzle brake; the barrel was not hopping up as much and the recoil seemed to be weaker. Then I screwed it back and forgot to tighten it.... Went to the range, shot 75 #7.5 shells, and the bead did not fall off. So I guess it is your specific gun that has this issue.Comment

I bought the Tru-Glo bead sight and installed in with locktite on my Mossy 500 – I made sure no threads were in the barrel and split that little stud evenly with the bead and the barrel.
One month later went out and fired over one hundred rounds of both 00 Buck and Slugs
No problems at all.Comment

Hmm..Interesting. Wonder if I have a barrel problem. Like the sight threads are slightly too large. I wrote to Mossberg since it's a Sunday. I'll give them a call in a couple days.Comment

Mossberg will handle it. And NO, you should not have bought another shotgun than what you did. 500's are awesome, like the 590's are as well. If you had bought a Police or a Wingmaster (at 2x to 3x the price of your 500) you would have gotten a good gun, but with less desireable controls (in my view). Had you bought an Express, you may have wound up with more troubles than a bead issue (rough chamber, less polished internals). You're great with the 500, just let Mossberg sort out your bead issue.Last edited by DHart; 06-01-2010, 2:22 PM.The clowns in government, "LAW MAKERS", act as if just passing ever more laws will improve our lives. +1 on the above. The 500 design is as proven as the 870 and is solid. Mossberg will make it right with the bead sight. Their customer service has been good to me the one time I needed their help.

Alright, I'll poke around and get into contact with them. Hope they're as good as you say and don't say...well you can just keep spending the 5$ per bead if you want to shoot slugs lolComment
