Guess what, long guns are not registered in Ca! The exceptions are AWs and 50BMG rifles. You're gun is neither. To be legal, you do need to fill out an interfamaliar transfer form which can be found on the DOJ's website.

I don't think he has to do that either. It's a long gun and the DROS (4473) that is filled and 10 day is a formality to assure the receiving party can in fact own/possess a firearm. If Shankasauras is not in a prohibited class and the transfer is to a direct decendant, I'm pretty sure it's a paper free transaction. It would be illegal to knowing provide a firearm to a person in a prohibited class. Handguns need the paperwork because they are registered.

AW's and .50BMG's cannot be registered, transfered, inherited, gifted, sold or manufactured (same for hi-cap magazines).

As I'm not a lawyer, consult the CA. DoJ website firearms section and look it up.

          "IMPORTANT QUESTION" ... ?

I hate to be the "mean guy", but when you call something "IMPORTANT QUESTION" (in all caps no less), this means that the question is (or should be thought to be) IMPORTANT to the reader, not just that it's important to you. It's a little like "crying wolf". In short, it's slightly deceptive and more than a little rude.

When you communicate in this way, it makes people tend to want to avoid reading your future posts, and not answer any future questions. Maybe you didn't know better, in which case please take this as well meant, friendly advice.

I don't pretend to be an "authority." I'm just a guy who trains a lot, shoots a lot and has a perspective.

First of all. the transfer im question does require paperwork. But only an interfamilar form is required. Secondly, your assumption about handguns is totally incorrect. I have several unregisted and totally legal hanguns. So, not all handguns are "registered"! Also, if the transfer in question involved a handgun, it would still only require an interfamilar form to be filled out and that the person receiving the handgun would also be required to have a vaild HGSC at the time of the transfer. The purpose for DROSing firearms is to provide a paper trail for both handguns and long guns and put unregistered guns into the system.

You're not being the mean guy, but you are being lame as all hell.

Seriously everybody else answered the question in their own way. If they did care about the title being in all caps, they knew it wasn't that serious to post a few paragraphs about it.

I mean WTF, if you are really concerned about titles being in caps and things like that. Then You really need a life!

              Its the internet!

Greg, there is no paperwork required to transfer a long gun (other than an AW or .50BMG rifle) between grandparent, parent, child, or grandchild at all. You do not need to send in an intrafamily form. The intrafamily form is for handgun transfers only, and it even states that on the form, http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/forms/pdf/oplaw.pdf

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Do yourself a favor, and dont do anything. Just enjoy the shotgun, shoot it, and treat it with the respect it deserves. I mean, wow, your granddads shotgun, how cool is that.
Last thing you need to do is start a paper trail.

Oh yeah, mellow out on the caps lock..........

I stand corrected! I've never filled out or even read the form since, I just store some of my guns in my dad's safes and he stores some in mine.
