Can you shoot slugs with a choke?

Can you shoot slugs out of a barrel w/ breacher choke? I have a Remington 870 Tactical Express Model # 81198 the barrel is tapped and has a breacher choke. http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2...ress-tactical/

I just bought some Federal Rifled Slugs.

A friend of mine said there might be issues. Any feedback?

Also is there a big difference between hollowpoint slugs and regular slugs? the way i see it is that they're both fatal.

As long as the breecher doesnt have constriction, it should be fine. Check the ID of the choke. It shouldnt squeeze anything down.

I have used rifled slugs in my 870 Tactical Express Model # 81198 without any problems. Remington's web site says (7+1 ) My remi is 6+1. How many does yours hold BOOGYM4N ?

i've heard that the tactical breacher choke is the equivalent of a cylinder or IC choke so assuming that is true, i'd say its okay, better if someone else validates this statement

The Remington breacher choke is a Cylinder Bore Choke!

(Since the slug is full diametered, you need a full choke.) <---- DO NOT DO THAT; that was a joke.

Seriously, a choke restricts the barrel width/diameter, so you don't want any. I.e. what you want is something called a "cylinder choke".

I have never heard of such a choke before. Do you have link or some details just to enlighten me? Generally, chokes are short, I don't see how a choke can induce rifling in the slug.

I remember seeing rifled shotgun barrels for shooting slugs. Those are special purpose shotguns.

You are refering to the Remington Tactical Choke which is made for Remington by Haskinator. It is not a breeching choke. It is as stated above Cyl Bore.

You barrel is thread and accepts all Rem Choke tubes including the Rifled choke tubes. I am not sure if the rifled tube gives any advantage as I have not used one. I have been told by experts that slugs and buck shot can reduce the life of a threaded barrel as these barrels are designed more for smaller shot. I would assume it would take a lot of slugs to affect the threading, however, these men know more about these things then I do so I accept their wisdom and do not use threaded barrels for HD.

If you want the best accuraccy with slugs from a smooth bore barrel then opt for a modified choke as this choke stablizes the slug better then other chokes. The worst choke you can shoot slugs out of is Cyl Bore as it has no stablizing effect on the slug.

I have seen deer hit at close range with hollow point slugs and they never expanded as they were simply not moving fast enough. I also don't know of anything in North America that if a 12ga will not kill it a 12 ga hollow point would. Seems like a serious waste of money to even buy them.

I've shot plenty through LM chokes without any issues.

Last I checked it was a "Carlson Door Breach Choke".

I'm picking it up tomorrow. I've just been shopping for accessories and ammo for the past 10 days.. anxiously waiting. I've always been under the impression that it was a 6+1 (7 total). Rem's website says 7 not 7+1. I'll let you know tomorrow for sure though

Booggm4m - As I stated the one on his weapon is the Haskinator. I am a Remington Dealer and will not post something wrong about a Remington part.

The choke you are showing is not the same one and that Carlson Company does not make them for Remington, they simply make their own " FOR THE REMINGTON SHOTGUN". Yes, they look simular but are not the same chokes. However, neither is a breeching device no matter what they call them. In my shop with do not call it the Remington Tactical Choke we call it the Rem Joke.
