Anybody have experience with Slug Guns?

Been looking to get into hunting and have access to wild pig and deer hunting nearby.
A friend mentioned that a Slug Gun would be best and most of his hunting takes place around 50-75 yards. Pigs are a nuisance where he lives, they dig up pipelines and underground wires, so mostly would be shooting wild pigs (they are big mean suckers too).

Looking at the Remmy 870 Slug and the Mossberg 930 Slug. There was a Benelli in that price range too. Mossberg is a semi and the Remmy and Benelli are pump.
I can shoulder the 12 guage, and there is plenty of good sabot slugs for cheap at my local stores.

    Any suggestions?

Any of them are good for sabot hunting. If you already own a pump shotgun, you can probably get a rifled barrel for it.

Yeah, any is good. If your not in unleaded zone, you can even hunt with rifled slugs out of your smoothbore. save the money for the trip.

Some of the Walmart sabot slugs were about 30 cents each (!?), the better quality stuff was still less than 80 cents per round, amazes me how cheap they are for the amount of material inside.
I read dont use rifled ammo inside a rifled barrel, also how quickly would the rifling die if you shoot some birdshot through it?

not quick at all...but expect your shot to group like a 3 inch sawoff barrel at 50 yards when shooting birdshots thru a rifled barrel. Where are you getting Sabot slugs for 80 cents a rounds? I want some! I see them around my area going for 28 bucks per 10 rounds!

I your shotgun has a smoothbore barrel, you need to use "rifled slugs". Sabots will work, but not deliver the kind of accuracy you want/need.

With sabot slugs, the best results are had with a rifled shotgun barrel. Most all the parts houses and outfitters will have rifled barrels for 870s, 1100s, and Mossberg pumps that you can hang on your already existing gun.

You need to be specific on an off the rack gun as to whether the barrel is fully rifled or not. Remington, IIRC, calls their rifled barrel guns "slug guns", but it's definitely worth checking at point of sale.

Walmart, they were all out of the less than 5 bux for a case of 15 today but still had some for around 10 bux per case. Ill go back tomorrow to check if it was clearance or not.
They were running very low on the 5 round cases too, only things they seemed to have in stock was birdshot and .223 rem

I dont have the 12 gauge anymore, was looking at the Moss 930 Slugster, has a rifled barrel and is semi. If it can do a 2 inch group at 100 yards I will be more than satisfied

do walmart even sell sabot slugs? I hvent seen them for so long I forgot if they did. But with the right ammo, you can get 2" group. It depend on your gun. Some like cheap ammo some like expensive one. Let's hope your like the cheap one so you can shoot it more.

you only change it if you want to shoot sabot slug more accurate. But you can shoot any slug out of a smooth bore. I've seen a friend kill a black bear with a smooth bore + sabot in unleaded zone at ~50 yards. Layed him flat the moment of impact and dead before hitting the ground. Must ofbeen the tumbling effect everyones talkig about
