Rem 870 & Options... Noob need Help!

I am a nurse and have worked trauma for 11 yearsand have seen dozens of people shot with 12 ga. "bird shot" and survive. The distances range from 5 feet to 40 feet. The wounds are very bloody and nasty looking, but the people were still able to walk away from the fight. I would never trust my life or my loved ones to "bird shot.". I use #4 and 00 buck inside only. Yes there is the risk of hitting a neighbor or family member with stray pellets, however any round that will kill an intruder runs the risk of running through your walls.

Being new to Shotguns, I'm still learning how they behave and how the ammo works. If it were a rifle, or a handgun, I'd know what to expect. But honestly, I don't have much clue about shotguns. However, I think they're great for HD purpose.

But I'm still a little confused about the ammo (which is good for HD?) I hear birdshot is fine, if you live in compact area such as Apartments. Some say, nothing less than a 00 Buckshot is good. I think, when we are speaking of HD, I don't think it's necessary to kill the intruder. The idea it to self defend yourself - but having said that - it must be strong enough to STOP them instantly.

Not trying to get into an internet argument but I think that you have made my point. Even you have "OO" and then slugs as your fail safe for the smaller shot that you are using. When using bird shot size pellets one is also assuming that the intended target is wearing clothing that will not further retard the efficacy of the pellets such as a heavy jacket in wintertime. In essence using #4 shot is a best case scenario use. I considered mentioning using #4 in my original post and opted against it for that very reason, it requires the used to assume best case scenario circumstances when you are in a worst case situation.

With proper training, practical shot pattern and barrier testing to educate oneself there is no reason that "OO" is unsafe for use in a CQB (close quarters battle) environment. Whenever anyone is using a firearm in defense of themselves or their loved ones, especially inside their home, they hopefully will already have a plan and know what lanes of fire are safe and which are not and can then deploy their defensive weapon appropriately.

I have conducted several ballistics labs and barrier tests and have been fortunate to witness several real world shootings. The reality is that most rounds from most calibers will penetrate most interior walls at CQB distances. A problem that I see in the training world all too often is people relying on anecdotal advice when selecting weapons and ammunition for their personal defense and the defense of their family.

I started out with an 870 28 inch barrel. I upgraded to a semi shotgun for hunting and turned my 870 into a "tacticool" shotgun.

I ordered a 18" barrel with a treaded end so I could use different chokes. It works just like any other barrel. I decided to buy a breacher choke and screwed it on the end of my barrel and it looks kinda neat. I'd recommend this choke. Its alot of fun and its shoots tight enough, yet I can still shoot buckshot.

You may laugh, but I think wally world sells 870's for a decent price.

A new barrel from midway is 200+, I dont know if your interested in buying the barrel, but if you are, ill take the barrel down to my local gunshop and get it priced out for you. Ill even try to get some pics if you need.

Oh I also got a Knoxx SpecOps Stock & PowerPak. So I preferred a gun that came with a standard synthetic stock instead of having 2 pistol grips. I was stuck in between Mossberg & Remington. Did not want to pay a lot for an auto. Moss & Rem are both great companies, but I just chose the Rem since I have a pistolg rip and the safety was closer to my trigger finger.
