    Gun Smith only Forum

This sight would benefit by a "gun Smith Only" page. On this page the site would pre-approve "gun smiths" and Armorers" by verifying their Credentials and Certification. These would be the only members allowed to respond to questions posted on that thread and only answer for question on weapons they are certified to work on or on General Gun Smithing. For example: I am a Certified Remington Law Enforcement Armorer and wold only answer questions on the 870, 11-87 and 700. I am an Authorized Remington Parts Dealer and could answer Remington parts and Accessory question.

Questions would have to involve the repair of a weapon or installation of parts that are involved in the operation of the weapon.

At present, you have guys responding to post and giving advise that not only risk damage to the weapon but can render the weapon unsafe. You have no way to know the qualification of the person.

This new forum would provide a place for "Correct Answers" . When I answer a question I am liable for what I tell you to do to a Remington and all my answers take that in to consideration as I am Certified by Remington, owner a business that repairs these weapons and I have liability Insurance.

There are hundreds of Clock, Sig, Colt, Remington, Mossberg and other Armorers out there. There are Gun Smiths on this site that have been working on weapons for many years. I am sure that several for each brand would participate and more in General Gun Smithing.

Anyone can of course post their questions in general forums and any member respond, however, this new forum gives them expert advise.

If you think this is a good idea then contact the owners of this site suggest this also.

        Negative.

That would place a level of liability on Kes since CGN would ultimately be responsible for "certifying" those allowed to respond.

There's plenty of bad information handed out by smiths, and there's plenty of good information handed out by hobbyists. It is the user's responsibility to review all information from multiple sources and determine the best action to take.
Some users will ALWAYS take the cheap and easy or DIY way out.
If the only options presented are costly, they're going to try to do it themselves anyways.

The only "safe" answer to any question is "Take it to a smith"... and then what would be the purpose of the forum?

I think he is liable now. It has not been tested but somone getting information from this site and following it and the result be a death by a faulty firearm could open the door for this litigation,

Don't even say the above is wrong. People were suing the gun manufactures because some dirt bag killed a family member with one of their weapons, till a new law stop this. This site is posting information that people use to repair rifles, handguns and shotguns and it is just a matter of time before this type of internet site is tested. Why do you think he has liability insurance???? The forum I am sugesting gives him another defense in that he had a professional forum for those type of question and has hard copy documentation of the people authorized to answer those questions.

Having a Professional forum would lesson his liability as he can state that post on that thread are for informational purpouses and all gun smithing should be performed by a qualified gun smith......

As it stands now, you have 16 year old kids most likely posting how to replace some part simply becuase they read it on some other site posted by some other clueless clown.

Also, the purpose of the forum is to give the guy and idea of what the problem is so some Gun smith can't bend him over. If a Certified Glock Armorer gives me an idea of what the problem is, I can protect myself from getting ripped off on the repair...

Here is a perfect example: A guy months back posted that his 870 would not cock when he racked it back. All these wantabe gun smith had the guy buying new breech bolt, slides, trigger plate assemblies and stuff I never even heard off........ I posted for him to check if the sear spring had slipped off.....yep it did. He put it back on and all was well. What if he had taken that to one of these crooked gun smith you talk about?

While good information on the internet is a good thing, all information on the internet is suspect.
That said I would love to ask a few questions from an expert on the rem 700.

I have gotten great advise on forums. I don't work on my own weapons other then my Remingtons. I have one gun smith for my rifles and another for my hand guns.

I got some info on ar-15 that was dead on perfect for a DPMS LR-308 and almost word for word with what the smith told me. That helped me decide on the work.

AS for my participation. I only do what Remingotn taught me and they assure us that when we stick to what we are taught, they will stand behind us. If we do something they recommended against, we are on our own. I answer post now on Remingtons and I am liable for what I am posting.

Just wondering why the OP posted this in the shotgun forum instead of the gunsmithing forum.

Figured he get more responses/interest in the gunsmithing forum about certified gun smiths than in the shotgun forum.

I think since the bulk of his knowledge is in Remington shotguns.

Not a good idea! Would you think a mechanic will give you answers
on how to fix a transmission? If his getting paid $50.00 an hour?
                    I don't think so.

Many certified Glock Armorers are trained basically just to remove and replace parts. Not trained on how to solve a problem.
I was offered one time to go and become an armorer and I declined. I've been working on my own Glocks since 1993.
Wether making them a Race gun or for self defense.

Well Pete, you are wrong. Many guys from this and other forums have called me and I talk them through repair issues. My how to videos show you how to tune up an 870. I could simply have the guys send me the weapon and make money off them. It is shocking to you that somone has been very sucessful and wants to give some back and help other.. On glocktalk.com there are several Glock Armorers that post answers.... problem is so does any one who read some mess on the internet...... Colt LE Armorers on AR-15.com are very helpful and yes, they get told they are wrong just like I do all the time.

If this is somthing you think would work, then help suggest it. If not then ignor the post.

It think it is a great idea and also a very nice gesture to offer free professional advice. If you don't want to take the professional advice then go to the "other" forum and take advice from the other guys. Atleast this would offer you the best (or worst) of both options.

I pm'd aippi and asked him some questions about an 870 super mag, he offered me his phone number and told me he would help me with my issues when I call him. See if you can get that help from you local car dealer!

                        Thanks aippi!

The thing is Pete that I would be able to recognize your responses on that weapon as coming from a knowledgeble person, but most guys posting questions can't tell the difference. Also, that "certification" don't mean much if the guy just gets it and doesn't apply it and learn the material.

So I would comfortable taking advise from you on that weapon.

It is looking like the "Nay's" have it on this post. I will keep responding to Remington questions 'cause I know it is helping guys. So when the clown jump in a explain how stupid I am, it will be up to guy posting the question to determine which reply to accept. Mine are always the company line with priority to safety, no damage to the weapon and making the weapon continue to perform as designed.

                            That's all you can do.
If you see someone giving bad advice, gently correct them. Maybe it's something that has worked for them and they haven't seen the potential problems with doing it. I run into that all the time with people working on or modifying their motorcycles.

Attitude makes a huge difference when someone it looking for help. I'd be more inclined to accept advice from someone who gently corrects bad information than I would from someone who backs the other guy into a corner and calls him out.
