removing dimples on an 870express

I picked up a remington 870 express on black friday for 279 bucks. i threw on a blackhawk/knoxx stock and a +2 mag extension tube.

I tried the socket method to remove the dimples. I got a 16mm socket (17mm too big) and hammered and wiggled it down. I still can't get rid of the dimples. Any tips or other methods short of dremelling/filing?

and If i DO end up having to dremel or file, what should i coat the bare metal with?

You dremel the inside of the tube with a sanding drum. Blow out the dust with an airgun/small rag. Done. No refinishing needed. It won't leave a hole or anything when you're done.

Look at my signature line and you will see I do this for a living and might, just might know what I am talking about. You risked serious damage to your weapon with that socket mess and may have damaged it. This socket mess was put on line by some idiot that did not know what he was doing. Follow the video and it will done correctly

And for you guys that are going to post that you have done 100 870's with the socket method and never damaged one, then I say if you even did one and did not damage it you got lucky. If you understood how the mag tube is brasied in you would not have been ignorant enough to be beating on it.

I hate to be so blunt and I should just leave it alone as I have sold several new receivers to guys who FUBAR their weapons with that socket mess and putting the right way out may cost me some sales.

this is what I did + I used the dremel to trim the OD of the plastic follower.

Listen to AIPPI, he knows what he is talking about. I used the drill method and it is simple, quick and easy. I used a 1/4" drilll and was done in 15 minutes, including sanding smooth and touching up with cold blue. Don't forget to clean out the mag tube before reassembly.

+1! Listen to AIPPI, I bought one of his guns direct instead of bothering with a dremel or a drill. (Well, there was also the fact that he was like the only person in the nation at the time that didn't have a 3 month backorder on the 870...)

I drilled the holes out and then deburred the insides with a dremel. I then ran a boresnake coated with CLP through it. Make sure the follower moves freely where you drilled and enjoy!

I'm not that good. If I tried that the inside of the mag tube would have spots of bare steel from the sanding drum and I would have to degrease them and cold blue the bare metal. Not to mention the damage to the walls of the mag tube I would do grinding the heck out of those detents.

I go back back to the Remington factory in April to recertify and I am going to tell those stupid guys up there that you guys know a better way then they do.

My 870 had it done 2 years ago. No rust on the interior of the tube to date. No damage to the outside walls or finish. This is probably what he was getting at in terms of refinishing. Thousands of rounds, nary a bobble on my gun. It works great.

Regardless, both of us know that the factory finish on the 870 express line isn't worth a hoot at battling rust anyways, so it's a moot point to argue IMO. If he lives where it's humid both the interior and exterior will be rusted out if he doesn't take care of his firearm in terms of humidity control and wiping it down with some form of oil.

Perhaps when you go back to Remington to recertify you can ask one of the employees there if you can meet his/her mother so that she may teach you some manners instead of coming off like a condescending prick. You speaking like that to myself in front of thousands of potential customers is likely the dumbest thing I've ever seen in my entire life, and I would know as I was married to the dumbest woman on the face of the planet. I've actually perused your website 2 weeks ago and was considering ordering a decked out 870 shipped to my local FFL from you as your prices seemed fair and reasonable. Scratch that now. Think before you speak next time. Or don't. Doesn't affect me.
