I was offered a Stevens 311 a few years ago and did quite a bit of research on it before deciding to buy it but when I did go to buy it the seller upped the price so I walked away.

There are a lot of SxS Shotgunners who say that the 311 is a great model for the price. So much so that the SSA folks have been scooping them up and have driven prices up. If you have a line of a good condition 311 for a good price (I was offered one in excellent condition for $250 but the seller decided to up the price to $300 when I showed up to purchase it) I would go for it.

Good guns, I have a short barrel one and my brother has a long barreled one. His got him into sporting clays etc. He uses a Merkel now, but he loves his Stevens and still shoots it.

The thing to be aware of is if there is any rattle in the reciever, don't buy it. Also, do not dry fire a 311! It will break the firing pin retention screws. I bought mine at an auction, which meant every shmoe who picked it up, dryfired it. When I inspected it, no problems, when I carried it home, it had a rattle and after I took it apart realized I was boned. Were I to buy one now, I'd bring along a nice new set of snap caps to make sure they were indented when testing the action.

It is fixed now, and a real mean little double.

I don't know why you wouldn't shoot anything out of it you wanted. Steel shot might be an issue but I'm note really sure. Plus, mine is definately a campsite defender type shotgun loaded with buckshot. I'm not going to be downing any geese with it.

The only other limitation is some have a 2 3/4" inch chamber while some have 3" chambers.

okay. so first I would have to check diameter. I am just making sure and wondering what people shoot or use theirs for.

I think mine is 18 in barrel too. so no geese for me either.
