Big 5 Honors Mossberg Combo Deal

to be honest, i went in to big 5 to look at the interstate 982 yesterday, just to see what all the hubbub was all about. it actually felt nicer than i expected. i kind of had my eyes on the mossberg combo before the new year but after christmas the funds were tight. i wanted the mossberg because i didn't want a pistol grip on the shotgun and prefered the location of the controls.

long story short, the guy told me he would honor the old sale price, so i picked up the mossberg 500. somewhat disappointed that you can't extend the magazine tube but i guess i'll have to learn to make sure every shot counts.

i want to keep it simple. i'm thinking a side saddle on the other side of the extractor and possibly a knoxx compstock. any other suggestions from mossberg owners?

They are a great shotgun and will give you lifetime of reliability. I have a 590 and it is great.

They will always honor the sale price if you ask nicely, well some managers would. Very nice shotgun, I have the combo in 20 ga.

and a weaver rails fore end to mount up a fore-pistol grip, then a tri-rail mount up front to mount a lazer and flash light and the rear to have ghost sights, and change the front bead to a front post to accomidate the rear ghost rings. Since the rear will still have a few slots left, put a RDS on it and on the side of the fore-grip mount a bayo. Yeap, thats simple enough. jk jk jk.

maybe a TLR1 or a very small weapon light. the last thing you want to do if (When) you need to use your shotgun, is fumble with lighting.

on my 930 SP, i have the mesa tactical 8 shot carrier and my L6.. thats it

              very simple, devastating, effective.

i highly recommend the mesa tactical shell holders. maybe the 4 or 6 shot, if you want to keep things simple and elegant.

I have the 500 combo. I really like it in the 18" HD config. I did swap out the buttstock for a speedfeed I had extra. It handles really well. Nice and light. Doesn't need any other gadgets.

i got it for the $279 price. it was the sale immediately prior to the most recent one. i'll look at the mesa tactical shell holder. that's the way i was leaning but they seem hard to find. i saw a lot of tacstar in stock. are those not as good?

also, is the compstock worth the extra money? i'm hoping it will reduce the recoil enough for my wife to be able to shoot it as well.

oh and i definitely want to add a mounted light. how would i mount a tlr-1? is there an easily mountable picatinny rail for the forend?

the mesa shell holders can be difficult to find sometimes, especially from a reputable vendor. but i have been using TSG for a while and never been disappointed. you can pick up the 4, 6 and 8 shell holders there.

the tac star is ok, dont get me wrong. they both hold shells and do it well. but the mesa is made of aluminum, machined to a low profile, and has inserts to keep the shells in place with "the perfect" amount of tension on them. the tac star just relies on tension from the plastic to "cramp" on the shell

the comp stock is famous for how well it works, especially with the magnum crowd, since those rounds kick like a mule. (3 inch nitro mag anyone?) its worth the money. good to go.

as far as the lighting situation: first, ask yourself if you want something easily removed, or something stationary? if you want stationary, you can just get a barrel mount and a fenix/surefire and be very happy. if you want something removable that can be used with other guns and taken off when you dont need it, use a rail mounted light (TLR1). and for that i suggest a picatinny forend, such as the choate or mako. the TLR1 will simply click onto the rail and tightens with a coin. simple

surefire also makes the m70 picatinny forend, but i dont think that would be in your taste for practical.

just consider how "busy" you want your gun to look. because eventually it will start to resemble something out of the terminator movies if your not careful. asess what you really want, and what you actually need

Didn't know they had it in 20 ga at Grande Cinco.

And yeah, just ask the Managers and since they sales cycle themselves every few weeks, it's usually no problem.

And +1 on a new buttpad.

You can extend the magtube, but it is not a simple project. Move the take down lug forward. Cut an 7 shot magtube down to the correct size to fit, and a new spring. Then refinish. $$$

knoxx is def the way to go. just strip her down and clean the hell out of everything and lube it up after you put it back together and it should be smooth sailings from there.
