    Monster recoil stories

    Hi,

Let me share mine. One day, I walked into Walmart, and behold, 3" 00 buckshot. Curiosity got the better of me, and since my shotguns are all 3" chambered, I picked up a box.

The other day, I tried them out, and OUCH! 3" 00 buckshot packs a mighty recoil. My shoulder took great pounding with bruise to show for, plus my finger took a banging too from the trigger guard.

Painful, but kinda fun in a macho, or masochistic way.

Let's hear yours - rifle, shotgun, or handgun.

My first time shooting guns, I first shot a 20 gauge. I thought that was crazy.

Then I was offered to shoot an SKS. It was way different, and felt a lot bigger than it looked.

Then I was offered to shoot an AR15. I turned it down, because it was an EBR, and the brake on the rifle was blowing the gases at me and I thought it must be REALLY powerful and would be too much recoil for me to handle after a day of shotgun shooting and shooting the SKS if it has that much blowback!

LOL I didn't know that the SKS was bigger than the AR!

That's my (perceived) monster recoil story.

Now I want to (if I can find one for sale) get a mossy 930spx and unload all 8 rounds of 00buck or slugs as fast as I can, and hope my shoulder doesn't break.

I put a video in your "shotgun gallery" of me dumping 12 3" 15 pellet down the full auto saiga 12 (aka "the beast") a couple months back when it was "adjusted" prior to the november florida saiga shoot and wouldnt cycle. yehp, real smart loading up 12 of those first thing in the day.....

I actually like the 3" buckshot. good and stout, but not that bad on the shoulder when you dont shoot hundreds of them at a time in a session.....

oh it knocked the snot outta me, but hey, i kept er on target, and the beast worked fine all day after that (ill admit it rattled me for a sec, that volley. I was fine after that, but forgot how bad that thing smacks you when you shoot heavy loads down it like that)

nothing like a big bored h+h double.....some of them big boys got some whallop to them. they say you shoot some of those safari guns three times. once when you get it, once to check for zero in africa, and once for the big one you pick off with it on safari.

I was at burro canyon last week and the guys next to me gave me a 3in slug and 3in buckshot to try out, it did hurt but not to bad, I think the anticipation of pulling the trigger was worse than the kick. I was shooting it out of a 870.

Another guy a few spots over had the same shotgun and they gave him some 3in buckshot and it really hurt him, he stopped shooting for a few mins and refused to shoot anymore of the rounds they offered him, but some how they convinced him to try a 3in slug while shooting from the hip, and I got a video of that, I am uploading it right now and will post it when its done.

Funny thing about those... When I first bought my 870 those were the only buckshot loads I could find. Shooting them at the line at the range they are not very fun, but when I'm shooting in a 3 gun match (trying to get rid of them now that I have 2 3/4) they don't bother me at all.
"As to the species of exercise, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun, therefore, be the constant companion to your walks." -- Thomas Jefferson

Not necessarily a MONSTER recoil story, but this one is relavent and funny nonetheless.

At around 13 years of age I went skeet shooting with one of my friends for the very first time. His family went regularly so they all had their own over/under shotguns, etc.

Anyhow, when we got to the range my friend's father explained the principles of gun safety, the basic techniques involved in skeet shooting, etc. He handed me his shotgun and proceded to show me how to properly shoulder it. He had me practice yelling 'pull' so I could follow the clay's flight path through the air and ultimately pull the trigger (with an empty chamber). Then he had me switch to my friend's shotgun; which was somewhat smaller in both size and weight.

I still remember him telling me, "Okay, now just do the same exact thing we've been practicing." What I did not know was that he had slipped a shell in chamber. Suffice to say, the next time I yelled 'pull' and followed the clay's flight path the shotgun went BANG when I pulled the trigger!

The GOOD: I hit the clay target!

The BAD: I was so surprised by the recoil that I partially dropped the shotgun and the barrel hit the ground!

Luckily for me everyone just thought it was funny.

Mosin-Nagant M44. Metal buttplate + t-shirt = no-no. The first 10 rounds were fine, but it progressively got worse and worse after that. After about 20 rounds I just couldn't take it anymore. Had a huge bruise next to my shoulder for the next few days.

Oddly enough I've just gotten used to it. Last trip out I think I put about 60 or 80 rounds through it and I didn't hurt at all.

50 DTC from the shoulder - meh. 50 Beowulf has more perceived recoil for me.

50 anything prone - yeah, it'll kick ya.
