Why no sling on a home defense shotgun?

I hope the sight and sound of a 870 racking will end the confrontation. But if the SG ran empty after six round, my idea is that you can transition to a backup handgun without dropping the shotgun. Any opinions?

from what i read is slings can snag on things.

btw,if i was in a situation that i ran out of shotgun rounds, i would just chuck it at them as a distraction so i can pull my back up weapon.

How about the loose sling getting caught on a bed post, nightstand, lamp, doorhandle, etc...

Last thing i would want is a empty shotgun round my shoulder,back or neck. If you just unload 6 rounds and did not stop the threat you have bigger things to worry about then an empty shotgun

Have you thought of getting some training?
Even a two day course at a place like frontsight will put you in a place where you'll never need to think about this kind of question again.

Consider taking a course in shotgun handling.

I took the sling off my HD weapon, not only cuz it could catch on stuff but also because it can clink and clank a little while moving. I want complete silence so I can hopefully asses the situation without the intruder knowing my state of awakeness.

To bad my ankles crack all the time when I first get up, oh well one can hope my joints will work when I need them too!!

Sounds like a side saddle or some ammo holder would help more. Even if you did shoot it dry and you had a handgun why not throw it down?

good thing mine holds 8 and 6 on the side saddle.. but if for some reason i cant get them down im throwing it at them and running to my glock 21...

Said many times, no need for a sling on a home defense shotgun. However it should be sling capable if it's also a SHTF/civil defense shotgun.

I'm getting a sling... but leaving it off of the shotgun at home.

Only putting it on if I need to carry it over a long distance with nothing to shot in between.

Well for a shotgun, what you shoot you need to replace that many rounds immediately. The key is to not unload the gun (without aim) and go for your secondary round. Your goal is to knock the threat with the least amount of shot and the quickest aimed shot. By the time your out of 6 rounds, you've done something really wrong. Also to stay calm and focus is important. Panic and fear can kill you. Stay calm, focus until the event is over...after that you can curl up like a baby at a corner and cry all you want, just as long as your the one still breathing.

Its funny because alot of people think they can drop the primary gun and go for secondary...most of the time, primary will do the job. After all, most gun fights ends in less then 2 seconds.

Sorry, giving away your location by racking a shotgun is poor tactics. Trying to scare someone who is already breaking into an occupied location is not likely to work. They're likely armed too and now know where you are. The only thing I want an armed intruder to hear in this situation is the sound of his brains leaving out of the back of his head.
