    Jamming 870 Express

My 870 will occasionally get shells stuck in the chamber after firing. Well I've done my homework on this one and I know what's causing the problem. Cheap ammo with the steel or aluminum bases expand when shot and get caught in the chamber. I can get them out by slamming the butt against my leg or the ground. I've also read to fix this I can polish out the chamber. That brings me to my question. What's the best way (mainly considering not damaging the chamber) to polish it? I've heard buy 000 or 0000 Steel wool, wrap it around an old brush and polish that way. I'm not feeling very confident about doing it that way however, scared I'll scratch it up rather than polish it, and I'm not certain if I go in and out while using that method or twist it. Another I've heard is to do something similar to what this guy does in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXC_PQkLkNA Granted, he is using it for a Mosin, but the principle is the same and really it's still an extraction problem solved by polishing with JB Bore Bright and a chamber brush and a drill. Any ideas which is better? Or do you have any other suggestions for it besides buying more expensive ammo. I bought an express so I'm clearly not looking to buy more expensive ammo.

I use a wooden dowl and steel wool to polish every barrel that I sell even the factory new ones. I use it to polish the barrels on every custom shotgun I build and I use it every time I clean my weapons.

You will not damage you barrel. You can not scratch the chamber or bore of your barrel with steel wool. If you want to buy chamber brushes and mess to put on them then spend the money, but you don't need that mess or anything else. Go to www.aiptactical.com and find the how to video "tube extension kit" and watch it. Look at the wooden dowl with the steel wool over it and make one like that but longer for you barrel. Make a shorter one with a full pad on it for the chamber. It is all you need.

You just got free professional advice and as they say "Advise is worth what you pay for it" so take it or leave it. Me, I spend my money on other things and don't waste it on all that high dollar cleaning mess. My weapons are as clean as any out there.

If you're going to a gun fight, take a shotgun. If you can't take a shotgun, don't go.

This happens to me too. It happens when I shoot the bulk 100 round count ammo boxes from walmart.

I wrapped steel wool around a old 12ga brush attached to a cleaning rod.

i stuck teh cleaning rod into a power drill. I sprayed CLP on my brush/steel wool before polishing the chamber.

i had to repeat the process several times before it was good enuff that i no longer experience "jamming" problems during Trap shoots.

This is the 3rd or 4th post of this similar issue over the past month. I wonder if it is poorer quality control on Remington's part or on the ammo manufacturer's part? Probably both....

Sorry to sound dumb, but what's CLP? I think I'm going to end up using this method with the drill. Are there anythings I should know before I start though like a certain speed to drill at, clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation. I just want to make certain I do it right.

                  okim,

Go shoot your shotgun. QC is a hit or miss with Remington.

My two 870s only 1 had a rough chamber.

                  28in barrel was rough
my 18 HD was fine.. zero failures.

It's not an uncommon problem. Not a big deal to fix. I'm just trying to get answers on the best way to do so. Mine is new, and I do tend pump fast. But I'd like to get it so I can pump at any speed and it will work. So I'll polish the chamber to solve the problem.

With a new shotgun 500rds would not be an uncommon break in.If after that honing or cleaning up the chamber maybe what you need. Try a little gun grease at the chamber end of the barrel .Works good for break in..

                            870 chamber

                            try this

Browse a HUGE selection of hunting rifles & shotguns, gun parts, gunsmithing tools, reloading equipment, ammo, and more! Brownells: Since 1939

been using these on several shotguns. One is an 870 Wingmaster I've had for about 30 yrs that's had over 200K through it (lots of skeet, 5 stand and blackbirds in the rice fields). Only thing replaced is the furniture a couple of times. I was using paper shells hunting and the chamber got a little...ok quite rusty, so I bought the hones. Afterward it was better than new.

Some of the steel cased stuff sticks in any pump. Doesn't matter if the chambers are polished or not.

Funny thing is that when I shoot the Cheap walmart special stuff, I don't have this problem but when I shoot Fiochi law enforcement ammo, I get that problem.
