Red dot on a Mossberg 500

A friend wants to put a red dot on his Mossberg 500.
He mentioned for hunting, so I'm assuming he's using the longer barrel with the vented rail, and I suppose he could mount a weaver/picatinny rail to that, but that would eliminate the option of using the original sights since the rail would be as tall as the bead.

The only other thing that I could think of would be to mount an AK style side-mount rail to the receiver... advantage is the dot would remain with the receiver if he swaps to the 18" barrel.

Any ideas? Anyone done this? Will a red dot tolerate the recoil from a 12ga?

Many of the new dot sights are designed to specifically hold up to SG recoil. Lots of folks mount them on their SG's for a multitude of reasons, they all work. Your friend will have to mount a rail and that will raise the line of sight so some consideration to comb height needs to be addressed at some time.
I'm using Sig's new STS-081 dot sight on my SOCOM M1A. It's tiny and it's held up well so far, 250 rounds.

There are a few red dots that are great on shotties...especially for turkey hunting!

I have an ULTRA-DOT 4 DOT that I will be selling soon for $140.00. (Let me know if you are interested, and I will knock-off an extra $5.00).

It is in near mint condition, and will take the recoil of a .50 cal.

Below is a picture of the Ultra-dot 4 Dot when it was still installed onto my Remmy 870P. (It has since been removed, as the Remmy is being used in 3-gun matches).

Might want to tack on an extra $5... my friend is in North Dakota so we should make him pay a "free state tax"

The mount is his main concern though. He was thinking of a $40 WalMart special. I directed him to the Primary Arms Clonepoints, which seem to be better made than some other clones, but ya... it's still a clone.

The main thing right now is finding a mount.
