Rem. 870 and 1100 preventive maintenance?

Hi y'all, I'm picking up a used 870 and 1100 for dirt cheap and was wondering what parts you'd recommend changing out for reliability. Both guns are around 20 years old and look to be in good condition and not shot much. I take delivery next week and haven't seen them in person yet. I'll be taking them out duck hunting soon and want to reduce the risk of suprises.

Obviously, both shotguns will be tore down, cleaned, and lubed! The previous owner passed away so I have no one to anwser any questions about the history of the guns. Thanks for any suggestions.

Looking from the outside is one thing. You need to take it apart and view it. Then you will know after you cleaned it up and properly lubed it and it cycles good, well you may have a keeper.

For the 870, nothing to replace.

For the 1100, the o-ring that is on the magazine tube that makes the gas system work. I bought a bag of 500 once. PM your address and I'll mail you some.

Both should have their trigger groups removes, cleaned well with brake cleaner or something similar. they should be run dry.

Good advice above, but change out the mag tube springs as they cost very little and most feed problems reslut from weak mag tube springs.

I say try shooting them. If they work, lube them and use them. Not a lot that can go wrong with an 870. The 1100 o-ring is the only thing that may go bad with age.
