Rem 870 for trap?

I am just starting to shoot trap and dont have alot of money right now for a gun. I was thinking of just getting a 870 pump 28" just to get started. I know overunder are the way to go but to much $ right now. Has anyone here used an 870 pump for trap?

I've shot plenty of trap with an 870.

The key is knowing where the gun is shooting. Ask the folks at the range where the pattern / grease board is. At the range I shoot, it is a big steel plate that I hang a piece of cardboards or paper about 36" square and shoot from 25 - 30 yds away. This way I know where the shot will be in relation to where I aim.

My trap gun has some adjustability in the stock so I can change the point of impact to match what I want which is 75% above and 25% below the POA.


The 870 will not have that ability to adjust so you will just need to know where it shoots so you can aim acordingly.

Good luck and start with a MOD or IM choke.

Sure. I started with an 870. You might want to consider looking for a Winchester Model 12.

For singles it's fine. When you progress to doubles, you'll probably want to get a double or a semi. Although, back in the day, Charles "Sparrow" Young designed a great two shot pump for trap. So, pumps have been used to shoot doubles since the late 1800's.

Last sunday was the fist time shooting trap and a friend let me use his browning cynergy since he just picked up a ceaser garinie. Both those guns are out of my price range right now.

I enjoy walking to the line with my Grandpas 16 Gage 870 and shooting as good or better than all them 2k+ Pirazzis and Barrettas. Since its all for fun the old boys just laugh at me....Very Fun

The 870 is a great trap gun. You can improve it as you go with a Trap stock and high rib barrel......Look at the TB and competition trap models. They have been used by world class shooters. Any 870 can be upgraded to that level.

I love shooting sporting clays with the 870. doubles is a boat load of fun with a pump!
