I'm now convinced that the culprit is the chamber because when I used the same ammo with a benelli nova, it cycled just fine. So I guess what it needs is a little bit of "break-in" to loosen up the chamber and there's no need to polish or grate it to hasten the process...I will just shoot it as often as I can.

remington 870 express extraction problem

I wish I would have done this, as it would have saved me a pretty penny. Sometimes I did practice/ break it in/ hope for no more malfunctions with target loads or bird shot, but I mostly went with the idea of practicing with the load I would use for the intended purpose of home defense. Therefore, buckshot. Lesson learned.most of the Remington express shotguns take a little breaking in a few hundred birdshot from walmart will normally do the trick. It is a pain in the *** that you have to do this but it is also good practice in clearing a jam and shooting your gun. Mine did it off and on for about 200 rounds and has not since. This comes straight from an email I got from Remington on the issue. Best of luck. The dirty little secret about freedom is, you're on your own. -Clarence Thomas

Same problem with mine, I looked closely after doing the bump the butt on the ground trick and the extractor tore through the cheap rim on the ammo. Some of it fired fine, but four rounds jammed. The guy at the range had a long metal rod that he dropped down the dangerous end of my barrel and cleared the jam with. I've got 50 rounds through it, I'll finish the box and next time go with a different brand.
The 870 has 1 massive extractor, the mossberg 500 has two smaller ones. I think that shotgun would be better with this particular brand of ammo. I just like the feel of the 870 better.Comment
