    rem 870 mag limit

quick question for you guys. I picked up a rem 870 from another calgunner recently. It currently only holds 5 rounds in the mag tube. I was under the impression that it would be able to hold more than 5 rounds with the extension. WHen I disassembled it last night, the mag spring did seem long and was difficult to put back in. Heres a crappy iphone pic for reference.

So what's the verdict? How many rounds is it suppose to hold and is/or my mag spring too long?

Unscrew the extended magazine tube. Yours looks like the +3 extension so it should hold 7 in there. Look down the main tube, are there dimples?

The stock tube should hold 4, with the extension it should hold 7 (or 6 if it's the +2 extension).

P.S. Where is your magazine clamp?

I'll try looking down it tonight for the dimples. What do I do if there is? I just quickly reassembled the gun last night and didn't put the mag clamp back on. Is it necessary?

Also, the mag spring does appear really long to me. Is it suppose to be difficult to put back in?

Remove the dimples. A half-round file or a Dremel works great

No, that appears to be an 18.5" barrel and two shot extension as they end flush. If the tube holds 5 then the detents may have been removed so that may not be the issue. If the detents are there. Go to www.aiptactical.com and put your cusor on the Customer Service link. In the drop down box find the "How To Videos" and find the video for tube extension kit. Follow that video to correctly remove the detents. If the detents are not there then the issue is the mag tube has been installed incorrectly. That appers to be a Remington tube and it is a two piece tube. Take it off. Remove the mag tube coupling and install that first. Then, with the follower and spring. Now feed the spring down and install the tube, however, before it is screwed in all the way, bump the coupling with the heel of your hand several times incase the spring is hanging up. Then screw the tube on. You also appear to be missing a barrel bracket and you will need that with that tube extension. Remember, the Remington tube comes off together but installs apart....

i tried 2 3/4 shells. I was only able to put 5 in. I will try what others have suggested when I get home tonight. Is the mag clamp necessary on the mag tube extension? I found it difficult to put back on

My Rem 870 with the +2 extension will hold 6 3" shells.

Yes, I mentioned that you need the bracket in my other my response to your post. The Remington mag tube coupling is not strong enough to support your tube. It is not difficult to put back on if you line the screw hole up with the grove in the tube. It has to line up with that grove to meet up with the threaded hole on the other side. Do this and it is easy to install. Do not over tighten it, just get it on snug.

after trying this and messing around with it, I got it to fit 6 shells now. I believe this is correct right?

Yes that is correct. I hope by messing around you mean you installed the tube extension correctly and this corrected the problem. If there were detents there and you had to remove them then you former owner should be horse whipped for selling a weapon with an improperly installed tube extension kit.

Yes messing around as in I tried your directions. No detents in the tube. Original owner bought it from big 5 like this and never shot it. After I picked it up from dros jail I disassebled it quickly to do a quick clean and oil and put it back in the safe. It was only the other day I decided to take it out and realized I could only fit 5 shells due to me reinstalling it incorrectly. Thanks again for all the help
