I won't get into the debate about the Benelli SN and the Mossy 590A1, but overall I was happy with my decision, even if it did cost me a little more in the end.
I almost went for the supernova over the 590 sp (same price at big 5). I decided against it because I don't like where the action release is. Now for a semi auto, the M4 looks sweet.

I've had mine for a little over a month. I've taken it to the range twice so far... I have to say that I've been more than happy with it. The first night I broke the shotgun down and cleaned and lubed everything. It's as smooth as butter and I've shot everything from #8 bird, 00 buck, and slugs through it.

Im telling you bro I can load eight 2 3/4 shells in the tube and 1 in the barrel on my 500. Not sure why that is. Ive bought this gun new and I was able to do that when I bought it. it had a wooden dowel in the mag tube which i took off and kept. other than removal of the wood dowel the ONLY thing modified on the gun is a pistol grip. i had three different kinds of mossberg 500s. One was a big 5 special combo soldit and i jsut recently sold another 500HD and that one took 8 rounds also. both were older models so maybe something changed. both my mossberg 500 HD were at least 13-15 years old. One was bought at Walmart back when wally sold guns in cali.

Very interesting. Big 5 obviously wouldn't let me load shells in the display model, but they were adamant about the 500 holding 7 in the tube. I figured the difference in the end cap just gave the extra inch or so to squeeze in the 8th shell. Could be that Big-5 just doesn't know what they are talking about. I checked the Mossberg website and it does list the 20" 500's as 8 shots and the 20" 590's as 9 shots. If the 500's really do hold 8+1, then I would join you in recommending the 500 over the 590 since the barrel selection is so much better.

I got to take the 590 out shooting. I will say that after tearing into an old TV as fast as I could shoot and load, my theory of the heat shield being useful after prolonged fun shooting was confirmed. The barrel was stinking hot. So for the heat shield, useful on the range, negligible for home defense, extra weight for carry gun.

            What do you mean uneccesary?

That's my back up. If you run out of ammo you can dismount the barrel and deal a viscious beating with it.....and the barrel wont be damaged in the process.
