Ouch, my shoulder hurts just thinking about 3" slugs .

Just shot 3" slugs yesterday outta my Mossy 500A.

My buddy was shooting the shotgun using 7.5 target loads bought in bulk at walmart. He said "man that thing's got a bit of a kick!". I showed him a 3" magnum slug and asked if he wanted to try. He was all over it.

I think he took about 5 steps back after that sucker went off. He probably shouldn't have gotten such a tight cheek weld with that load either cuz he got one heck of a bruise on his cheek from the kick.

I have fun with slugs.... but... OWWWWWWWWW they do kick a bit...

I would be very surprised that a new 870 would not have the screw in rem-chokes. I haven't seen the OP state that he had a fixed choke barrel.

My 4 day old brand new 870 doesn't accept chokes.

It is slug dependent on weather you can shoot them out of a full choke. Read the box of slugs if you can't run them in a full choke it will tell you. Lots of slugs have been run through a full choke.

Remington Ghetto blaster shotguns as a rule don't have screw ins. High end Ghetto blasters might. Most Benellis have screw ins. If you buy the Remington 870 tactical with the key to the city on it, you can remove it and put in screw in chokes.

You usually can't shoot Trap and Skeet (at least well) with one shotgun without changing barrels, chokes and/or stocks. It is best to decide what you want to shoot first and make sure the gun is suitable for that sport. Skeet is shot with open chokes and low comb stocks, Trap is shot with tight chokes and high comb stocks so you aim under the rising target. That way you can see it when you are lined up properly. For casual stuff......Who cares? you can have fun shooting anything.

Thanks for the info. I tryed to shoot skeet with my Browning a-5 yesterday in Redlands and I only hit 25 out of 75 so i thought this is not the Gun for that

Cheek bruising comes from NOT having a solid cheek weld or easing up on it at the moment of detonation. Also to reduce recoil, try applying forward pressure on the forend (with the support hand) while pulling back on the butt stock (firing side hand). The dynamic tension relives a lot of felt recoil in pump action shotguns.
Most discomfort from shooting the SG comes from the following:
Improper stock fit, improper stock placement (on the shoulder muscle, not in the pocket) and finally allowing the gun a "running start" at your shoulder and face with a loose grip/mount.
But back to the thread....Shoot whatever fits, whatever you can afford, but birdshot is probably best for practice. Slugs will extend the distance you can deploy your SG to about 100 yards and if you like get some and experiment.
All SG's are different. If you don't like the patterning with one brand of ammo the easist way to tighten it up is try another brand (especially true with buckshot).

That's the exact stuff I've been blowing through at the range. 6-8 rds of #8 and I've chopped the target in half! I get through maybe 35-40 rounds before it get's too punchy on my shoulder and I have to take a break.
